Watching the FA Cup game Liverpool v WBA. Time to perhaps re-evaluate Everton's performance against the two of them. After a first half in this game WBA lead 3-1 and in my opinion justifiably so. Our 1-1 with them does not in hindsight look that bad and in fact on this current score and our 2-1 defeat by Liverpool, actually made us the underdogs against WBA under Pardew's stewardship.

There are teams in the Premiership without the super creative players. but capable of holding their own. Barry was awesome and you can see how he would be good for us now. We should have kept him maybe one more season. Especially when you see McCarthy injured now. It shows how a big squad is necessary.

The Barry debate is irrelevant. Koeman reluctantly let him go as he said. Barry wanted game time and Koeman couldn't guarantee it.
All season we have been crying out for pace so would Barry have helped us? Maybe. His midfield passing is 2nd to none but his yellow card score was high.
I'm not sure he would be able to help us if he was here.

The problem with the LittlePool game was we did not have a CF, we should had one lined up on the 1st January?

28 Jan 2018 06:26:02
I agree Smit, adding Barry now would change very little of our real problems. It’s obvious to everyone that we lack pace and Barry never had that. Time will tell if adding Tosun and Walcot will be enough to address the issue.

Again see above post about too much change. Our club has chopped and changed so much. We let our center forward go. We let our number 10 go. We let are central midfielder go. We have an injury to his partner now. We bought 2 new center backs in the last 2 seasons and a new keeper. That is the whole spine of the team changed. Yes we can say we had no choice in Lukaku and Barkley or Barry. But we should have been planning ahead. Williams can only at best have been a stop gap. We had no center forward for half the season. We bought about 4 number 10s and then had no balance to the team. The age caught up with Williams and Keane has either lost confidence or is not as good as originally thought. Add in the new keeper to the spine thing I am talking about. So yes I think having the consistancy of being able to call on Barry's experience and leadership qualities even if only for parts of games would be good. well we couldn't look much worst than we do now could we?

28 Jan 2018 11:11:30
Degsy. Wouldn’t Barry have been useful slotting in at Left Back in Baines place or even play Jagielka at left back. Using Holgate, Williams or Keane as Centre backs.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jan 2018 12:06:44
We didn't let our no 10 or midfielder go, they wanted to. It would be unfair to Barry to keep him and not play him at his stage of career.

I think what we'll find is that towards the end of the season we will know who is up for the fight and who isn't. The ones, that aren't will be gone and a nucleus of players to build a team with.

We need consistency in the first 11 but we also need it from the manager as well.

Yes Keen17 I agree. BJU. I think you have a sort of downer on my posts. Whatever I say you seem to disagree with. That aside. We allowed Barry to go when he was under contract. No player is guaranteed 1st team action. He was happy to sign a new contract last season. so was our player. He is a real professional and I am sure would not have caused disruption as per Lukaku. And yes he could step into defence. Yes he was quite brilliant for WBA yesterday. I would have tried to keep him irrespective of his age. I think we are missing his presence. You might not agree but that's my opinion.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jan 2018 19:14:45
I totally agree with you Degsy. For Barry I wouldn't have kept him at 38 as you have got to be fair to the player. A younger player has time to fight for Barry he's got a couple of years at most. He could step into defense and he gave the best cover out of him, Gana and Snids.

For Lukaku i'm glad he's gone. Good player but him and Kev were so disruptive. Maybe the reason we don't have any team spirit is because of them.

As for the rest of your post it's spot on. 4 no 10 is stupid beyond belief and the rest of your post is great. Only disagreed with keeping Barry. 😉.

We all know what we need now and in this transfer window.
In the summer if Moshiri has big plans for us to be moving into our new stadium we need to change our mindset.
I know we are not at the level of Man City but when the likes of Lescott dropped his levels and reached a certain age they didn’t say ok he’s ok as a substitute and back up for the first choice CB.
We need to be like this in the summer clear out Jags and Williams and possibly Baines and let’s get players in who are either first choice or young and wanting to take their chance. We have enough youngsters already so I suggest we will need to spend big on established players to compliment our youth. Think about it now forget our youth players but name our 11 starting senior players for next season?
Pickford
Coleman
Keane
?
?
Walcott
Gueye
Schneiderlin?
Bolasie
Tosun
Niasse?

To think Tosun and Walcott only just signed maybe I can see what Sam is trying to do. If he is here next season that is?

It would make sense in the summer to evaluate everything and see what other Managers become available. I would imagine Conte might? PSG May part with their manager too!

For years, it's seemed that the club has paid lip service to being truly aspirational and in reality has decided to "settle" for being unable to genuinely compete. Remember Moyes and his "bringing a knife to a gunfight" mentality? How's that different from Moshiri's comment about "expected losses" earlier this season?
In addition to the club's attitude, how many of us fans have the mindset that our club will always "Everton" things up?
It's more than self-deprecation or "gallows humour" - it's become so bad for many fans that the anger has become apathy and we shrug our shoulders and are being ground down day after day, match after match, season after season.
If an opposition team haven't won in ages, then we joke it'll be Everton who lose to them,
If an opposition player hasn't scored for a while, then we expect him to break that run against us.
If we win a difficult cup-tie against tough opposition, then we just "know" we'll lose with a whimper to a "lesser" side in the next round.
If we're linked with an exciting transfer, then we expect it to drag on and probably collapse while another club steps in to complete it themselves.
If we develop an exciting young player, then we're resigned to him wanting to move on because we (the manager, the coaches, the club) can't -, or won't - take him any further towards the success he wants.
The one bright thing about our club is the excellence of the EITC work, BUT we're a football club not a charity and while EITC gives hope to many (especially those less fortunate than the majority of us) , surely the footballing activities of the club have to be done much better and give hope to the fans?
Final thought: when the new ground is built, will it named "The False Dawn Arena"?

Believe it or not Bobby every club is exactly the same. if you go on any forum or site they believe the same things will happen to them.

In work last week almost every Liverpool fan said after beating City they would get beat by Swansea because 'that's what we do'. Sure enough they got beat and the next day every one of them said I told you so.

The anger is built up now because of twitter, Facebook and forums. Years ago we didn't have them so it was only really talked about in the pub and we were too drunk to remember

The world today is a much angrier place because of the furore that these places whip up. Not just football.

If posters want to know more about the Premier League regulations (e. g. transfer rules, squad lists, etc. ) , may I suggest they check out the premierleague website (it's a dot com - not a dot co dot uk address) .
At the end of the main page, there are a list of sub-headings. In particular, look under "More" and click on "Publications". From there you can get the "Premier League Handbook 2017/ 18", which will detail (amongst many other subjects) how players can be registered in squads.
There's plenty of other information and publications if you're willing just to dig around that website. For instance, a few days after the transfer window closes, the officially registered squads are definitively listed.
If you want to know similar info about UEFA competitions, then I'd suggest looking at the UEFA (dot com) website. Likewise for FIFA and English FA matters.
While the rest of the Internet (and social and traditional media) is great (? ) for gossip, banter and rumours, the factual official stuff is readily available for anyone prepared to get it and read it themselves.

27 Jan 2018 13:31:11
If part of the problem this window in getting signings in is freeing up places in the squad, and with Garbutt apparently being registered this window, do you happen to know Ed if players can be deregistered? I was wondering if after poor McCarthys horrific injury which will see him out for quite some time, and I don't mean to sound heartless, but can he now be deregistered before the window shuts to make space for a replacement, or is it set in stone once declared for the rest of the season?

{Ed002's Note - Yes they can be removed but that is not stopping anything happening.}87

27 Jan 2018 13:00:02
I still have faith that we'll sign at least one more player in this window, a defender hopefully, but I've always believed that a big part of a club in our particular circumstances (mid table, not in any cup competitions, not as attractive a lure as the capital blah blah blah) has to approach to the merry go round of the transfer window by patiently waiting for other clubs to do deals first. For example, several clubs are after a LB, some for an improvement on what they have, whereas we barely have one at all, even if you sewed Garbutt, an injured Baines and Cuco Martina together, so suddenly a player who has had to make way or face competition might suddenly be tempted by a move and might do a job for us. Certainly better than the Frankensteins Left back option we have. A possibility may emerge where a quality player we may at one point may have considered to be beyond our reach is suddenly in a position to at least be willing to listen to an offer. I wonder how a player like Juan Mata, who i believe would be good for us, now feels after becoming third choice behind Sanchez and Lingard? Doubt he'd come, but its just an example of a possibility that perhaps didn't exist before another club went about it's business.

I see lots of posts for and against the manager. I see lots of posts saying young players should be chosen to play. I see posts saying we should be after this player and that player and others saying which players we need to get rid of. Out of all these posts, I see that I am not alone in wanting what is best for Everton. I have my own views which often differ from other Blues. But the overiding thing that hits me, is that our huge club was neglected by management and investment post Kendall's initial management. We missed the bus for the Champions League/ top 4 positions. Initially it was Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. You can now add in Spurs and Man City of course after both clubs had 5 years min of major investment prior to the FFP Rules. What upsets me now is that I firmly believe we would need probably 10 to 15 years of constant growth/ investment as a club in order to attract the top players. A one off Champions League season can provide funds and attract a few players, but you really need constant qualification. Only if the infrastructure is already in place and you have a reputation like our neighbours can you still attract the top players. that's why we pay £20 odd million for Wallcott. that's why when we get gems like Rooney, Arteta, Graveson, John Stones, Lukaku, Fellaini etc they bugger off the first time the 1st time a Champions League team comes in for them. I am 60 years old and in order for me to see a great Euro Everton team, I think I will need to still be around in many more years to come. The Moshiri money influence will allow us to hang onto the shirttails of the above mentioned clubs but I feel we will never be in that mix unless some rule changing happens or a miracle happens that I cannot foresee. But yes we all hope and pray.

{Ed025's Note - thats really depressed me degsy, as a heavy smoker and drinker entering my 60th year i cant really afford to wait 10-15 years, can you please tell them to get their arses into gear mate as i dont want to miss it.. :)

Brilliant post degsyp. We certainly missed the bus and the mythical three that came along at once. The eye was taken off the ball and never seen again. As Ed025 says the thought and your vision for the future is quite depressing, it will indeed take a miracle. Through it all though us old un's (some older than others herrr huuumm) will carry on moaning but carry on attending. We can but live in hope. I honestly believe that Mr Moshri is trying to bring some semblance of order and have to believe that behind closed doors some are being read the riot act and some will eventually be shown said door and asked to close it quietly on the way out, for some I hope sooner than later.

We have to look to Tottenham as a beacon for what we can do.
Levy doesn't spend anywhere near as much as the other 4 or 5. They spent their Bale money on lots of players, some good, most bad. But they have bought well since, add to that Ali and Kane and they are up there.
We have bought a lot of players this year but I do believe we have bought some good ones. What we need is to find our Pocchetino, and with some money in our pockets we can get there, but it won't be for a few years.

Agree2 Disagree0

27 Jan 2018 19:12:36
Yes Smit666 I agree but also remember Spurs spent for about 10 years before getting where they are. and yes they lost some tars on the way to bigger clubs. They will also need some luck to keep the momentum going. It really does have to be a 10 year plan and not a project as managers like to call it. meaning a few years. it really is a longer term thing these days. If you look at our history, as a club we have put together successful teams that have lasted 2 or 3 seasons and then crumbled for one reason or another. We must hope that Moshiri is still with us in 10 years and continues to find funding that does not breach Financial Fair Play rules. And hope he is aa good organiser!

Agree1 Disagree0

27 Jan 2018 20:00:10
The stumbling block about Nzonzi and players of his ilk is the same as that faced by Siguurdson and Klaasen: Wayne Rooney. He is no longer a striker, although I believe bought as one. Sam has said (the same as most of us) that Siguurdson and Rooney cannot occupy the same space. Bringing him to the Club has with respect created more problems than it has solved.

You asked me why I want them sold. I don't. I want them playing in the team. But aren't using them any shape or form so they aren't getting game time. They're young so they should be playing gaining experience. They aren't so why keep.

Before you lot say it, yes I am becoming an old moaner (probably bored with the pipe and slippers) , but as such it gives me time to read the latest updates on what our illustrious Club is up to and being nosey what those Clubs we would like to be up with and have about the same financial (nowadays) clout as us. This morning I read that Spurs are close to paying 21.9 mill for Lucas Moura (25) from PSG. Compare that to us paying 20 Mill (plus) for Walcott and I have to ask, are we really ambitious or happy to potter along in mid-table for now with no greater aim than to finish top 6. There are examples of the Moura/ Walcott happening all around us. Perhaps there is more going on behind the scenes, but so far it is not obvious to us fans.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - a lot of us are disillusioned at this time DFS, the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off and top 6 seems a long way away, we just have to hang in there mate and hope that things improve..

27 Jan 2018 10:58:26
Yes that's the type of player we should be looking at but I do feel that sadly we are geographically hampered unfortunately Liverpool will not have the same pull as London to foreign players and that will be a factor with so called premium players from abroad so even if we offer exactly the sane deal as a Tottenham we are going to struggle against them for signing players yes we all love Everton and would kill to have the chance to be in a position to play for the blues but to most of the players it's a job and that's it they have no emotional attachment and will go for what is best for there families and egos.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Moura would not move to a club like Everton I am afraid. To offer the same as Spurs Everton would be able to offer Champions League this season to him (obviously they can't) and European football next season (which realistically is only a slim possibility. It is nothing to do with egos or families.}

27 Jan 2018 11:10:47
With the greatest respect DFS, spurs are in a better bargaining position than us. Champs league is a big pull for players. What we have to do is buy the best of the rest and get a manager and team that are going to progress the players we have and bring through a sprinkling of young talent. It will take time by that is what Moshiri needs to do if we are to emulate what spurs have done.

Now this may sound daft but please stay with me on this.

We all say the manager sees players in training so should know more than us supporters, well he watches Williams and Schnids, and Martina and thinks they have something, yet when they play they look clueless.

Now on this basis, who’s to say the likes of Garbutt, Beni Beningame and the like may not look as good on the training pitch but put on a football field, could actually be much better, the perfect example could be Niasse who might not pull up trees on the training pitch, but when called upon, he seems to do it on the pitch.

I really believe if we play a natural left footed player Garbutt, a ball winning and good passer Beni and Holgate in his preferred Centre half, those tweets could go a long way to balancing the team and give us a better chance going forward, the previous is not working so why not give those three a try out, in their natural positions.

Big Sam has said it himself Bazwil but hasn't stuck to his "back to basics and get everyone doing what they are good at" philosophy. And that is why I am losing patience with him.
Siggy is a 10 so should be played as a 10, Schneiderlin is Dcm so is Gana, only one can play at once. Rotate either with some energy. I. e. Baningime or Davies or experience, Rooney.
Garbutt is a LB so for me, he has to play at LB.
Too many players out of position or form, in every game we play.

I am in my retirement comfortable, partly through hard work and luck and thankfully my kids are heading the same way. All thanks to a philosophy of good forward planning and an attitude of if you don't ask you will not get and 100 percent certainty that you will not learn how or know what to do (to get) .
