Sometimes its just not your day. Thought there were some poor performances today from our boys but ultimately the game was won for Sunderland by their keeper. Thought Joaquin Phoenix did a great job stopping us today. Hopefully we can move on swiftly this sunday.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Disappointing result today, but nothing to compare with the sheer horror of being tonked 6-2 at home by ManUtd in a Boxing Day fixture in the late 70s. I think that was the end of an even longer unbeaten run. Anyone remember that match?

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes, everyone thought vast majority of our players had been on the pop the night before!

some proper moaners on here!we didn't turn up today and before we started to have a proper go it was too late! howard should never have played the ball through the middle to osman having a sunderland player breathing down his neck!then a rash challenge knowing what the outcome was going to be.bobby should of started barkers as he makes our system tick and is big enough and fit enough not to need resting! lady luck had a big say today and the bounce of the ball was against us!not forgetting the definitely handball incident right at the end!get a grip you negative moaners things are looking up still, 1 bad day with the odds stacked against us is not the end of the world! Oh dear, how sad, never mind.
It's gone now, so learn the lessons and work to minimise the negatives and maximise the positives in preparation for the next match. Finish the calendar year with a victory and move on with confidence and optimism.

Does someone know a good eye doctor? Because apparently the game I sat and watched today was different to the one some others watched. We played some amazing football today, like we have all season and one individual mistake has cost us dearly. This is football and it happens. The best team doesn't always win. If that's what it takes to beat us: a stupid error punished with a goal and sending off and resulting in a 0-1 defeat. Well ill take that. I don't subscribe to the ridiculous comments below about some of our players and roberto himself. I can only assume these people either support other teams and are trying to ruffle a few feathers, or they have just had a terrible xmas and need to vent. Either way, we were far superior today even with 10. Keep doing what your doing roberto. This is the first low in 6 months. A win against sputhampton and this game is a distant memory.

(1) Who are the likely players coming in during January as temporary cover for Gibson and Kone?
(2) Who would be the likely incoming replacements for Heitinga and Jelavic if they leave during January?
(3) Who else would you let go in January and/or who else would you bring in?
(4) Which of the young players at the club do you see being worthy of a chance in the first team during the rest of the season?

Here we go it was enevitable that we would come unstuck with this passing from the back lark (never thought it would b ossie tho), not looking to rosey now is it blues, get shut of Roberto now, why didn't he bring Naismith on who has a knack of getting an important goal, jelavic should be put out of his misery those overheads were embarrassing should have pushed jags up top an lumped it considering the situ, but no we still had to keep passing he has no flexibility in his approach bit like moyes but other side of the coin! Que our poor run!

For a work in progress, RM's Everton isn't doing too bad so far.
Only two league defeats and some really good football in most, if not all, of our matches. We've ridden our luck on occasion, especially defensively, but could we have hoped for better results overall to date? We're currently staying in contention for the European places and hopefully some squad strengthening in January will give us a chance to push on during the second part of the season. Just wish more of our younger players were coming through a little quicker, as we surely don't have enough money to bring in the number of players we'll surely need in order to replace all of our over-30s during the next few transfer windows.
Very disappointing result today, but how many of you expected our overall points record (and league position) to be any better at this point?
It'll be interesting to see the players, formation and tactics that RM will use against Southampton bearing in mind the suspensions and any injuries.
How the players react to today's defeat will be fascinating.
Also, please no more throwaway media soundbites from the players about aiming for the top four, etc. - just win the next match and see where we are at the end of the season. By all means have the ambition, but don't talk about it - actually do it!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We badly need a striker. Lukaku is not doing the business - not interested and not putting in a shift which is disapointing. We need cover in centre back as well. Shane Long would lead the line well imo. Mirallas need to wake uo as well.

Ratings:. Howard-6-haha I will get to osman don't worry. Coleman-7-looked assed and is still improving. Jagielka-6-what was he doing with the ball he should of carried it but kept going sideways. Distin-7-solid as usual. Oviedo-8-awesome today and is only going to get better. Barry7.5-misses southampton game but was still reliable as ever today. Mccarthy-7-tried his best today and is still a bargain at 13m. Mirallas-5-did he play today? Non-existent. Pienaar-6-first touch was poor but did some decent passes. Osman-2-his first touch was just grrrr, he is so bad but as usual everyone will find a way to blame someone else as it is never osmans fault. Lukaku-4-he has pace and power but does not use it, all game was poor touches, offside and never going towards the ball, all game he was on the right wing getting outmuscled and outpaced by phil bardsley for christs sake, maybe we need something else. Joel-6.5-unlucky with the penalty but tried to get us going with throws. Barkley-5.5-dont try and excuse him he isn't bothered about the team he is only interested in himself and trying to win the game on his own but wasted so much. Jelavic-6-looked assed and if you can actually comprehend this I would start him against southampton just something else. , we need signings badly. Mike-Ox Long

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree that we need more depth to the squad so that RM can bring in quality when the first choice players aren't performing well or just need to be rested or rotated. The question is do we have the money to bring them in from outside or do we have young players at the club who could step up?

dissapointed with todays result but it had to happen sooner or later.even with a man down we played well and deserved at least a draw. hopefully we get back to winning ways against soton
and go into the top four.as for the team that started today i'm sure rm knew what he wanted from the team but due to a silly blunder it did'nt work out. these things happen to every team so do'nt lose the faith.

Love RM and think he is the man for us but starting Osman for Barkley will never understand or expect to see it again. For the second half with Barkley our 10 were much more than their 11.

Really gutted need to make these points now. CL is a real possibility and that money is needed badly but can't give away points like this. Need some depth in Jan. this is the chance of a decade.

It's a kick in the teeth losing today, and I agree with everything you say BBB, but I can understand why he started with Osman, it's the busy Christmas period and you have to rotate were you can. You could argue that todays game was one of the easiest of the season (on paper) so it would be the perfect game to rest Barkley.

rubbish happens, but I'm absolutely gutted. I hope Osman has nightmares tonight, nearly a calendar year unbeaten at home, we 'should' be third in the league, and we've lost

Agree0 Disagree0

Sorry, never got to finish that post - And we've lost Howard for 3 games. GUTTED

Tim Howard only has a one match suspension - the match against Southampton - as does Gareth Barry. Well that's what's reported on the Everton official club website.

A lot of positives could be taken out today firstly we deserved a win with ten men secondly Jelavic was showing a bit of his old self a loss isn't that bad a result Liverpool loose at City and Chelsea and if we can win against Southampton we'll be in the top 4 onwards and upwards! P.S to all the negative people one loss doesn't decide a season.

We were poor and put Osman on and leave Barkley on bench was beyond me, lukaku is none existant again, and mirralas ill but he's been awful all season.

We always seem to be the team all the bottom teams can brake there bad run against

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Mirallas and Lukaku seem to be coasting at the moment as they're more or less guaranteed their place in the starting XI. Mirallas has been abysmal all season, seems to believe he's made it because he has that vile gold Bentley. Lukaku, poor for the last 4 or 5 games, big Vic would've been more effective.
DB Cooper

Even I draw the line at thinking Vic would be more effective.

Feel gutted but I suppose that's just because expectations are higher. Have felt a result like todays will hit every team at some point but just didn't think it would be sunderland at home for us. let's hope we turnover the saints and make todays result a blip and nothing else. Hopefully january means a bit of a boost for us in terms of fresh faces. Personally I'd love to see diame, defoe and one other pull on the blue shirt. Chin up all you blues.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Isn't it significant how so many of us have had our expectations raised so much during the course of just a half season? From having loads of posters fearing RM's defensive inadequacies and criticising the pre-season transfers, we have actually seen just two league defeats and a good transfer window. Let's see how the rest of the season pans out - and how good a January transfer window we have.

Yeah Ox Long, we battered them. From the seat I was sat in we did everything but score and if it wasnt for Manone we would have done. Yes we were poor but we did batter them
Colin

Agree0 Disagree0

Terrible result. Terrific performance. Mike must have been watching a replay of the CP game. On another day we'd have won comfortably. Replay that 9 times out of 10 even with 10 men and we'd have won it. It happens from time to time, chelski - qpr last season for eg.
DB Cooper

Agree0 Disagree0

Our luck ran out today. If we had won a game 1-0 like that with some great goalkeeping saves and defensive clearances - like we surely have down ourselves in the past - we'd be delighted. Today, the boot just happened to be on the other foot and we didn't get what our pressure would usually deserve and actually get. That's football, so we move on and look to get the three points against Southampton.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Dec 2013 23:47:27
Once they scored they just kept it for the rest of the first half, second half we had possession and we were getting forward we had a shot from oviedo and a header from jags but apart from that we didn't do anything, I've seen us play worse and saying we were poor wasn't right I meant in terms of chances created and clear cut opportunities we didn't do enough to win

That's it. Barry and Howard suspended for Sunday's match against Southampton. Lukaku can't wait to get back to Chelsea. Deulofeu out for two months. Others injured and losing form. Squad too thin to cope. Our luck has finally run out. We'll lose to Southampton, could well get turned over at Stoke, and rest too many players against QPR and go out of the FA Cup.
Then we'll really see how Martinez handles reality. Baah humbug.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Lukaku can't wait to get back to Chelsea? Where's that come from?

Give your head a wobble. One defeat and your spouting that complete tosh. Seriously, too much drink for you at xmas. i'd stay off it for a couple of weeks, let the mind and liver recover. Its clearly had an adverse impact on your sanity.
Colin

Agree0 Disagree0

Lukaku has been at pains during the last week or so to compliment Mourinho. This follows some comments a while back - by both Lukaku and Mourinho - about why the player left on loan.
The player was always going back to Chelsea at the end of the season - we couldn't afford him and he clearly wants to go back and Chelsea probably don't want to sell him. He's emphasised all of this by being busy of late making comments so that his return won't be tainted by any ill feeling with Mourinho arising from his loan move.
Besides, does anyone think he's played that well during the past few games? Luckily for him we don't have someone really suitable in the squad to rotate him with. He's still a young player, so is still learning his trade, but he's one who would benefit from missing a game or so and then coming back into our team fully recharged for the rest of the season.
But what do I know - just be thankful RM does know what he's doing.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Dec 2013 17:04:26
I can't belive RM didn't start Barkley today. Ross is haveing a great season and bringing Osman on, the only thing he has done is provide, not just the assist to the makems goal, but the red card on howard. I had the feeling we wouldn't achieve the unbeaten run in 2013. Gutted. Now we have fallen behing the top four contenders and we've got newcastle and utd just behind us. Excellent

Believable0 Unbelievable0

At the start of the season, did you honestly think we'd be as well placed as we are - 5th place, just 2 league defeats, a win at ManUtd, outplaying Arsenal for long periods, a good transfer window, etc., etc.

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Dec 2013 17:03:48
Was always going to be a tough proposition breaking down a 10 man defence with 10 men. Unfortunately that minor lapse has cost us dearly. Roll on Southampton, the lads have a point to prove now.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I wouldn't say that the lads have a point to prove now, as their performance in the second half today - and during most of the season to date - has been pretty good. What they do have to prove on Sunday is that they can come back from today's disappointment and win three actual points.

Lukaku says he is gearing up for a return to Chelsea next season and really admires the chosen one! Looks like we have no chance of him staying then. Also Hull have said Davies is not for sale at the figures mentioned in the press. We will have to dig deep in our pockets.
Degsypulford

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I don't think there was ever any chance of Lukaku staying. What it will help do is attract good players for loan next season.}

26 Dec 2013 20:57:00
I will say this now, as much as I like Lukaku, if Chelsea are relying on him to win titles, champions leagues and cups they are gunna be in for a rude awakening. I think he is a player who will have a few good months followed by a few terrible months. Difference is, here he can have a terrible month (like he is now) and stay in the side. At chelsea he will be cast aside and not seen for weeks.
Colin

Agree0 Disagree0

Let's wait and see. Lukaku might develop into a player as good as Drogba was. Only hope he doesn't start diving like Drogba did at the start of his Premier league career.
