Hi all, new here, just some thoughts on yesterday, the season so far and what to do next.

Last few weeks have been a reality check after us zooming up the table. It's a bit of a facer of course but the manager needs time and I think he's made progress, just not as much as we'd perhaps hoped. We're a mid-table side at the moment after half a season with a new manager on the back of a terrible 2017-18 season but at least having a go and looking up.

Yesterday and the Derby particularly hard to take but personally I applaud Silva for trying to go toe to toe with Spurs.

We did the same away at Man U and were only beaten by a dodgy pen and no-one said then that we should have parked the bus. The same when we drew at Chelsea and again at Anfield when we were only beaten by a freak goal. We have looked like we can compete with the top teams which we shouldn't forget just because of a bad run of games and one hammering.

Yesterday we really missed Gueye and with McCarthy still not fit he went with Davies alongside Gomes. We had a go and if we hadn't thrown a goal away and if that goal had been allowed (I know, 'if. if. ') then we'd have gone in at half time on level terms despite gaps where Idrissa would normally have been. We may even have played differently had we gone 2-0 up; on the break perhaps, but not to be.

When Gomes went off there was nought in front of our defence and they exploited it ruthlessly as they would against any team without their 2 first choice defensive midfielders. Spurs are the best team I've seen at Goodison this year by a long way.

He could have put Mina on and pushed Zouma into centre-mid but we were chasing the game so I can see why he didn't do that.

I do wonder why he didn't have Beningame on the bench though and why has Niasse hardly had a sniff all season? his goal per minute rate was the best in the whole Prem last year.

For me we need to keep Gueye, get McCarthy back and give him and Beni some game time and move Morgan on. If we can get a really good striker in Jan then sound in which case take a view on Tosun but keep DCL as he is showing progress and give Niasse a go from the bench at first at least.

I also feel we need some more leadership on the pitch. McCarthy might help if he can stay fit.

Then in the Summer, a replacement for Coleman, a proper striker and, a box-to-box midfield general to boss everything, you know, the type you can never get.

And the zonal marking thing, we've not sussed that yet but worth persevering with as other teams manage with it. What do you reckon Ed?

Good post mate. My philosophy though is different. 2017-18 started out bad but disliked by many he maybe Alardyce delivers what is on the can. We ended up 8th and that with a poor Squad. There are Teams above us now that in the past could not live with us. Everton 7th was our other name. You cannot go gungho against the likes of Spuds, Liverpool etc! Not yet anyway. Wednesday let's see if lessons have been learned.

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Dec 2018 22:03:46
Fair post. You're right about Allardyce, 8th wasn't bad given the circumstances (although we were already in 13th thanks to Unsworth who did a great job. )

I think with decent signings we will climb again soon and finish around 6, 7 or 8 by season end but you are right about seeing if lessons have been learned on Wednesday, if not then my optimism may look misplaced. I read that Gueye will be back but Gomes is out so I'll be interested as to who plays alongside Idrissa: Morgan, Tom, Beni or James McCarthy?
Merry Christmas 🎄.

Someone else mentioned Zouma, must admit I had forgotten, but yes the lad did play as a DM in front of the back four and did a good job by all accounts (Chelsea) . Like the lad (Davis) but we have a headless chicken paired with a maybe tackler more conditioned to pushing the opposition back through his runs and passing (Gomez) . Two games for me coming up, don't do well and I think Brandts and Moshri will be hot on the phone line.

Have to say I totally agree with Woburn and Johnnyin their posts below, some of the players in the squad simply are not good enough, Keane, Schneids, Davies, Tosun, Niasse and Lookman to mention a few, also Besic Miralles and co need to be off our books, another is Seamus who is off his best, this guy has had a horrific injury so I am sure he will for one come good again and what a servant he has been for our Club, Marco and Marcel have started on getting their own team but this will take time, i really think they have done well in the short time they have had with only one window so far, this was never going to be a quick fix, bring on Burnley and Brighton you never know we might get 6 points and we will all be happy.

Lookman, good player, Richarlison, good player, Walcot, good player. For all of the previous you have to make damn sure you have a solid base behind them and a midfield that can not only control but feed, then once fed they need someone to hit. Incidentally, a lot has been said of Walcot and his unhappiness at Arsenal because he thought he was a striker, Alardyce got him in on the promise he would be allowed free running across the front line. Never played across the front line, never played as striker. We have been crying out for a striker, just saying.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Dec 2018 23:17:28
Interesting shout about Walcott. I guess he could be tried there the way Richarlison has and put Lookman on the right. In the past Silva has said he wanted to play 4-3-3 but we seem to line up 4-2-3-1 with Sigurdson the middle of the 3 but if he dropped a little then it could be a regular 4-3-3 which could give more freedom for Walcott and Richarlison to come inside and support whoever is in the centre (DCL for me at the moment) and even have freedom to switch around depending on the game eg could fill in if CF drops deep to overload midfield (like Kane yesterday) .

I just want to forget about yesterday's game, it was painful to watch. Next 2 away games are at Burnley and Brighton respectively. I'm still hoping for a late Christmas present of 6 points but I'm not overly optimistic. I'll get it in now, Merry Christmas my fellow toffees.

{Ed025's Note - same to you howie mate..

24 Dec 2018 10:06:58
everyone saying they didn't want silva, who did u want, what magician did u expect to come in and make us compete at the top in 5 months?

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - im with you johny..

24 Dec 2018 10:22:36
thats not me being funny either ed its a genuine question, who did they want who would be doing such a better job than silva, silva wasnt my first choice but he's here and ill back my manager to the end, i think he's doing a great job but needs at least 2 more windows to clear out a few and replace them with his own players.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - it was never going to be a quick fix johny, my only concern is that the regression since the derby has been very worrying especially in defence, it wont matter who we get upfront mate if we ship goals like we did yesterday, hopefully that was a blip mate but the tactics were very naive at best and thats disconcerting..

24 Dec 2018 10:37:20
i wpuld jave liked to have seen yesterday when gomes went off, mina come on instead of morgan and move zouma into midfield he has played there for chelsea before and looked good and we needed a presence in midfield to help the defence out yesterday as even if the defence cleared a cross/ shot midfield wernt tracking back so there players had free shots, deles goal and Ericsson's goal wer both avoidable by having a player in the middle willing to track back, shows how much we need gana in there, he may not be great on the ball but he is a disruptive player who breaks up play, we can not sell him in jan to PSG he is vital to the team.

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Dec 2018 12:41:51
I'd of played Baines alongside Gomes. We missed the defensiveness that Gueye gives us.

I agree with Johnny about backing Silva but to answer the question of who I wanted instead: Diego Simeone or Marcelo Bielsa who's at Lille and a big influence on loads of top managers. I won't be surprised to see either in Premiership soon.
But like I say, I'm with Silva and am happy for him to get us having a go at the top teams.

Reality check here guys. We are nowhere near top six and never were. Silva has been in the job for five minutes and is still coping with the dross left to him. He has to be given time. Time to offfload those He doesn't want and time to bring in his own players.
Only then will we know how good a manager he is. I was in management for a lot of years and believe me if you get a couple of negative people in your team it can bugger up the rest.
Give him time.

GB it just worries me the way people think things can be put right overnight. I can think of at lest six players who will most likely never play for the club again but still need to be sold. Till then it will never truly be Silvas team. Just be patient and let's see what happens in January.

24 Dec 2018 09:47:38
anyone calling for his head and booing players needs to get a grip, probably one of them pathetic fans who walked out after 60 mins.
few bad games and all ov a sudden the i never wanted silva bandwagon has started, grow up lads and get behind the lads, we came up against a top top team yesterday who tore us apart yes it hurt but we go again boxing day. i go the game with my dad and my son and yesterday we stayed to the very end to clap the likes of lewin who ran his socks off, my 10 year old was so angry in the stands and i said to him, its ok mate spurs are ahead of us but we will get there oon enough and his response was its not the players am angry with dad its the fans walking out and booing wer on the tele and everyone can see empty seats makes us look like crap fans.
all this silva is just martinez is crap he's a good manager who is learning and will take us to the top given a few seasons but if we spit our dummy out again and get another manager sacked, who is coming in? who would want to work for a club with such fickle fans who want u gone in 6 months if your not in top 4?

Believable2 Unbelievable0

24 Dec 2018 10:57:32
I wonder if you will feel the same come May when we finish in the bottom half. A good manager gets the best out of the players he has, ie Moyes, this guy does not. Just spending money and getting better players is only part of the route to being a good team.
A good example of this is the over the hill guy at Man United who got sacked, he is useless these days.
I believe Moshiri fancied Mourinhio here at one time, our owner needs better advice on picking managers.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Dec 2018 11:38:02
If the fans want to boo and walk out they have a right just like the players who can't be bothered to run a ball down and put a shift in also make our club look crap don't have a go at the fans have a go at the players and management Jonny I've payed my money I can do what I want.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Dec 2018 11:35:31
You need to focus on the games against us, united, Chelsea etc, you don't all of a sudden go from those performances to dross overnight, it's a combination of things mainly your keeper at the minute, said it to blue mates of mine. he's not the player everyone says and I've said that from last season. decent keeper but vastly overrated, the goal that should of stood then the crazy decision he took coming out when zouma had it under control.

Its fine margins like that that change games those two incidents happen and you unravelled, its all still new and this type of thing will happen so you all need to stay with your team and manager and focus on the positives from the season so far, when you put back to back wins together and your manager tells pickford to stop believing the hype and get back to basics, you'll be fine. Unfortunately 😂.

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Dec 2018 13:10:23
personally skylark i think its disgusting to walk out on your team, wer called supporters mate its our only job to support, if your having a bad game and u look to the crowd for encouragement and all u see is empty chairs with 30 minutes to go would u put a shift in? get behind the lads stop thinking wer all better managers than silva and accept wer not at the level required yet bit we will be given time.
will any manager ever be given time with out pathetic "supporters"

{Ed025's Note - everyone was poor bretto, i would show them a re-run of the game and get the players to put it right, its not a crisis but we do need to get back on track mate..

Do you know who FM gets his advice from when he picks his management? because over the last 4 times something isn't right. silver apart, they have been shocking and if it happens again something needs addressed. is it FM or outside sources? they are not just bad choices they have been terrible and I think it's going to happen again with silver, sorry to say.
