RM said this week we still have an outside chance for Champions League. Most of us (including me) think 'that ship has sailed' but if (and okay it's a biggy) we beat (home or away) all the teams presently below us and beat the teams at home above us, that's 81 points, surely enough to qualify?
One problem, that means we must win every game left!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Of course we have a chance, if we win all our games, but Arsenal can win the league if they win all theirs. Unfortunately, it's just not going to happen.

Agree0 Disagree0

One step at a time - we have a difficult away match at NUFC on Tuesday evening. But I love the attitude of the OP.

Agree0 Disagree0

We CAN get into the champs league virtually we are in with 5 points of Arsenal if we count the game in hand as a win, we've got to win against Newcastle and hope that City beat Arsenal and we win against Newcastle, Palace, Fulham and we would be in 2 points of a champions league spot when Arsenal come to Goodison, we've got to win most of our remaining gamesadn hope Arsenal drop points.

Agree0 Disagree0

Our next three games Newcastle, Fulham and arsenal we win them and arsenal lose to City we're one point off fourth with a game in hand

Agree0 Disagree0

We still do have a chance. Arsenal look very vulnerable, and if we do our job, they may not pick enough points to see us off.

was really impressed with Bony today and really hope we go for him. Also thought McGeady did well.have to say though we were outplayed for large parts of the game but got a bit of luck for a change

Believable0 Unbelievable0

They were unlucky tbf to lose but that's ho it is, I gurantee they would be further up league if they wernt in the Europa

My player ratings
Howard-8
Baines-6.5- Some good defending but was not afforded many opportunities to do much
Coleman-5.5
Stones-5.5 was good a times but made a massive mistake and a few other as well. Been impressed with him in other performances though.
Distin-9
McCarthy-6
Barry-6.5
Mirallas-4 Was quite bad today despite his assist. He kept giving the ball away and just looked out of place. I liked his run after he pinched the ball but should have done better with his effort.
McGeady-7-grew into the game well
Barkley-7
Lukaku-7 Thought he played well and he didn't have a lot of support for large periods of the game but dropped back and made some good passes to link the play.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Stnes defintly to young and not strong enough yet, still needs a few years I think because I wouldn't say he's had a decent game for a while, prob the cup match against swansea

Ed do we have any interest in jordie clasie, jack colback, martins indi, wilfried bony or traore (young barca winger)?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - i would be guessing mate, they would all fit the bill for me, but it will depend on price and availability and of course if bobby wants them..

22 Mar 2014 20:13:27
Even when we take 3 pts people still moan yes we did not play well in fact we weren't great against Cardiff either but let's see 2 games where me were below par 6pts then against spurs and Chelsea where we deserved more we got 0 pts so a point ahead of spurs and game in hand and 8 off arsenal with game in hand and still to play them I know long shot but 4th place is not out the window just yet arsenal next 3 games
Home to Swansea
Home to man city
Away to us

Are next 3 games

Away to Newcastle
Away to Fulham
Home to arsenal

Still think we can catch them but need to take 7pts from those 3 as I don't see arsenal beating city so if we can close gap to 4 or 5 pts for when we play them we will still have that game in hand and there defeat today will make there game against Swansea so difficult as they will be nervous

Believable0 Unbelievable0

4th is certainly still a possibility. However I feel that the next 3 games are must wins if we are to stand a realistic chance.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - i dont think 4th is a real possibility, i would love to be wrong, but im a realist mate..

We played well away to Chelsea and Tottenham and got zilch.
We came up against an inspired Cardiff keeper last week and weren't totally convincing for periods against Swansea today, but we got full points.
It's a funny old game ;-)

Agree0 Disagree0

Of course the chances are fairly low ED, but I can see Arsenal dropping some points. I also think we are capable of racking up a decent amount of points from the remaining fixtures. I don't think we should hold our breath for 4th but all the same if we do our job, it is Arsenal's to loose which is possible beyond the mere mathematical possibility.

Lukaku has proven he can score 15/20 goals a year over the last three seasons I would take him over bony any day plus he has age on his side an I think this mite be bonys honeymoon season and I don't think he will be the the same player nxt year an won't score as many as this year just like a lot of first season honeymoon players so lukaku for me any day

Believable0 Unbelievable0

22 Mar 2014 18:28:44
Bony is better mate, much more aware of the players around him, can hold thr ball up very well, looks good in the air and can't half pick a pass, his touch is good and his technique at times was just wow

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - im with you swan, i just feel swansea would want a small fortune to let him go..

But Bony has gotten better and better as the season's gone on. Players only usually struggle in their second year if they where instantly amazing in their first. He offers far more to the all round play, to be honest, so I'd take Bony of the two.

Agree0 Disagree0

I wasn't all that impressed with lukacu today. Certainly not champions league quality. Bony looked sharper and his unexplainable substitution is the main reason we got 3 points. Remember he was a second half sub fir the beginning of the season before michu got injured.

Full season and you'll get 15 to 20 goals. But as ed rightly said, he will not be cheap

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Mar 2014 21:02:51
Our war chest should cover the signing of both bony and lukaku. If we can tie barry down to a couple of year contract I feel this would be adequate for us to move forward from this year. Get our injury list down by the return of gibbo and oviedo and get a couple of loans in, particularly wingers and we'll be set with the step up of a couple of the youth team to compete for both domestic and european honours. If we grab the 4th spot, we'd have to invest a little more, but that's where the money is anyway so nothin to worry about. hope we finish this season as we have done previously and go hell and leather for that illustrious 4th spot. Arsenal definitely have more banana skin games to play between now and the end of the season. Coyb

Agree0 Disagree0

But bony is five years older than lukaku heading the ball is not the b all an end all plus he has five years to get to heading the ball better than bony and he will cost as much as bony he is already a full international player who scores goals for his country he is only 20 an if he was that rubbish like everyone keeps saying then why would chealsea pay 18 million for him when he was 18 when they could of bought bony at the time for around 8 million. I don't understand why everyone is against him so much he can take our club to the next level striker wise

Agree0 Disagree0

Lukaku is a goal machine, much more clinical than Bony. Lukaku has areas which need to be developed but his current abilities are very good and he is still young. Plus he has not really been offered the chance to play full games regularly since signing for Chelsea and before coming to us. He made some lovely passes and touches today aswell. I think Lukaku is going to be top class and I also think this is our chance to get a top striker. I would be disappointed if we passed it up for a good player like Bony.

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Mar 2014 21:28:31
Yes they paid 18m for him when he was 18, and now they want to get rid, bony was fairly unknown then, as was friggin falcao for god sake, lukaku, is maybe a bit faster, his strength is inconsistent, he also has a poor leap, which is very hard to imrpove, if possible at all, bony already has it, bony is more clinical and has scored more goals, he also sets up the whole team to go on the attack, lukaku cannot read the game like that, you speak of their age as though bony is close to retirement, bony could go for another 8 years or maybe more, lukaku also has a huge ego and only seems interested in himself, I bet if we bought him he would want out after 1 maybe 2 seasons, bony on the other hand doesn't seem to be running his mouth every five minutes changing his mind, lukaku has the potential, he has all the physical attributes, but his ego and his poor ability on seeing the game around him is poor, bony has it all, lukaku just doesn't do it and is very frustrating to watch

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Mar 2014 21:31:01
And about international level, lukaku has benteke to contend with, sometimes together, he has no competition, bony has drogba, traore, kone, ya konan, gervinho, doumbia and sio for competition

Agree0 Disagree0

I can't agree moor blue tit I no bony is a good player but I can't help but think lukaku will be miles ahead of him by the time he gets to 25 this kid really is the new drogba if we pass up the chance to sign him then in the long term it will be a huge loss to us

Agree0 Disagree0

Competition or not swan he still scores goals at international level and 8 years left out of bony for 20 million we will get lukaku for 20 and get 13 years out of him we will come back to this post next season when bonys honeymoon season is over. And when chelski signed lukaku he was very little known to I understand its a mater of opinion an everyone has there own views an my view is lukaku is a better long term investment. And you can train on improving your leap an heading it just takes specific training

Agree0 Disagree0

Lukaku wasn't unknown mate you would have to be of been living in a shed or watch limited football to of not heard of him since he was 15, levy of spurs would choose to buy lukaku because he has potential to be great and he would have a better sell on value, short term bony would be better next season out the two

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Mar 2014 03:22:42
Again, lukaku would want out after a season or two, bony wouldnt, so there goes lukaku being our long term solution, sell on value, yes, except I wasnt thinking about selling him, I don't think about buying players to sell them on for more, in which case we might aswell sell coleman aswell, we are not a selling club anymore, think further and hi mike, I said bony was unknown, same as falcao, doesn't retract from their ability, not lukaku, who btw I never heard of until chelsea bought him, either way, bony, at the moment is the bettet player and won't want out as soon as we sign him, unlike 'the fridge'

Agree0 Disagree0

Lukaku will not want to stay another season unless we are in champions league, his words. If Chelsea still want to get rid it will be to someone else. This player is not someone who can take us to the next level.

Agree0 Disagree0

I personally think Loric Remy is better than both. He is the most complete striker in the premier league who is not currently playing for a top 6 team. And he is owned by QPR.

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Mar 2014 13:29:49
I really like remy mate, he has had a few injury problems which is a worry and his finishing is nothing special, he also refuses to shoot with his left foot, preferring to cut inside and end up losing the ball, he also has an ego, see him last week? 'i will (WILL not WANT, will) play for one of the top five teams in the world', that is arrogance at its best, I would also question his commitment

Agree0 Disagree0

I think my point was that spurs have dne that this year and wasted a 100m doing it, bony would be my choice mate because i'm confident next year he could make massiveimpact, to be honest i'd be happy with either in a dream world we get both because whoever we do buy if either one of them we still need another decent striker

Ratings: Howard-7-made some great saves but is dodgy on set pieces, Coleman-6-didnt get involved and wouldn't tackle anyone, Stones-7-made one big mistake but was solid throughout, Distin-9-his tackling and winning of the ball was awesome, great today, Baines-6-found it tough against dyer and was caught out for the first goal, decent pen though, Barry-7.5-was good again today but maybe could of played a few more good passes when our players moved, Mccarthy-6-looked edgy on the ball, not like him today, Mirallas-6-, YES he got 2 assists but if he didn't he would be a 5 at best, always on the floor and should of taken his chance, been poor for a while now, Barkley-6-doesnt look up and had 4 yes 4 chances to play mccarthy, mcgeady and lukaku (2) through on goal but he ran backwards instead, Mcgeady-8-impressed me today, can't believe people saying he had been awful when he has started 3 games, all of which he did well in and against cardiff as a sub he did well, worked his socks off and kept the ball well today, made up for him, Lukaku-6-took his goal well but his touch and passing was poor and won 2 out of about 20 headers, Naismith-6-not on long enough to judge, osman-6-not on long enough to judge, Deulofeu-6-same as them 2. We were not good today by any means, need to pick ourselves up, bony had a great game today, no need to take him off, thank god they did, we need to imrpove for next game, coyb

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Here's my take on what overall was a damned lucky win

Howard - 8 made some great saves
Coleman - 6 didn't do a lot
Baines - 7 looked like he was missing Pienaar. Good penalty
Stones - 5 and that's being generous. Lots of mistakes that could have proved more costly than they did. Needs to be dropped and should have been subbed
Distin - 8 animal. Has anyone checked his birth certificate? Looks as fit as he did when he first joined. MOM
McCarthy - 6 looked busy without actually doing a lot
Barry - 7 a calm head and looked composed
Mirallas - 7 should have done better with his chance but less greedy than usual and looked interested which has not always been the case this season
Mcgeady - 7.5 energy to burn and tricks coupled with some decent crossing/passing. I didn't care much for his signing but looks promising on this performance
Barkley - 6 has much to learn including picking a pass. I'm expecting big improvements for next season
Lukaku - 5 a goalscorer? Yes. A footballer? No. Can't control the ball, can't pass and not particularly quick with the ball at his feet. I know he's young and he has the physical attributes to become fantastic but I just don't see it happening for him at a top club. He's a poor mans andy cole
Subs - not enough time although Osman looked to have borrowed his first touch from Lukaku and his pace from my grandma. For the first time I totally agree with mike about Ossie - he's completely finished

We deserved nothing today.
We were outplayed at our own game.

Agree0 Disagree0

Think you're being harsh on Howard. He was dodgy at set pieces, but his saves really did save us, and that's what's important.

Pod, giving stones that low and saying he should be dropped is ridiculous. He is occasionally over composed on the ball, but that was only exposed because they left two men up top. He defended well

McCarthy did more than you're giving him credit for, too. He offered very little going forward, but typically, it was always him intercepting the killer ball or clearing the danger. The way he drops back into a Sort of 'roaming, 3rd centre back' when they break is probably what saved us from losing this game, like we deserved to.

McGeady was excellent and has been in almost every appearance.

It was a bad performance, but no more than I expected. That's what Swansea do; they dominate possession, play around you, make you look terrible and then lose.

Arsenal's next 3 fixtures
(H)Swansea (not easy)
(H)Man City (hard!)
(A) Us (hopefully bloody hard!)
Interesting times if they go into meltdown after todays battering.
PS : Please Bill break our transfer record - Boney for me after today's performance (why they brought him off God knows).

Missed the game as preference was to show MC v Fulham here. How did we play? Scoreline suggests a bit of a mixed bag. 3 goals but the stats indicate a strong swansea performance.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

To be fair to Swansea they played well and should have scored more but for once we were the clinical team, finishing our chances. At times we couldn't keep the ball but overall I think we played well. Depending on Arsenal's form- there may be a chance for 4th

Agree0 Disagree0

22 Mar 2014 14:23:06
Hi all, Even though its very unlikely 4th spot is not impossible. As I write this Chelsea 6-0 up against Arsenal. If we can win today we would be 8pts behind Arsenal, with a game in hand and Arsenal to come at Goodison park. that's a 2pt turn around. If we could beat United at home that would put them out of the equation. both Arsenal and us have to play City. So don't give it up yet. The fat lady is on her way but she ain't here yet. COYB. ps don't worry about Spurs there Sxxt.

How much do you think we will have to spend if we get in to Europe and how much with out? Cheers.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - Isn't that between you, your wife and bank manager? We need more info Stevie boy, like how much do you have coming in, what you pay to your mortgage etc and I'm sure we will work out what's a fair amount. One more thing, is this including flights or just your beer tokens and lap dancing/prostitute money? If it's an all inclusive the price of flights and women will vary depending on the destination.}

Stevie, I found this:

"Each team that qualifies for the Europa Leagues collects a €640,000 participation bonus and also a match bonus of €60,000 for each match that is played in the group stage. That makes the minimum amount earned for Europa League qualification €1m, but ever team receive €140,000 per win and €70,000 per draw in their group games onto of the first €1m.

If a team wins all their group matches, they earn a total of €1.84m, just from the group stage of the competition.

A team then receives €200,000 for reaching the round of 32, €300,000 for the round of 16, €400,000 for the quarter-finals and €700,000 for the semi-finals.

The prize money for the clubs that go all the way to the final will be €3m for the eventual winner and €2m for the runner-up."

So all in all not much as Champions league gets you 7.2million euro just for qualification
