What is very evident to me pre season is how quick we are going forward. I also think under moyes the players where too scared to run with the ball in case they went out of position.

Out of ALL the names we have been linked with, who do hop think we will actually end up signing or do you think it will be somebody who has not been mentioned yet.

Ed do you firmly believe Ross barkley can go on to be world class these players that have raw talent seems to get sucked out of players in this country I know they have a job to do for the team at times but I would like to see barkley being allowed to express his self, although Rooney has been brilliant in the prem I feel he has not gone on too be the player I thought he could be and I put that down to not being selfish enough look at messi and Ronaldo they have that selfishness that makes them who they are ok sometimes you do need to pass it at times but look how many times they loose the ball Rooney lost that rawness over the years cause of fergie if he can get that back he will be like the Rooney of old edge of your seat stuff {Ed025's Note - its up to ross mate...he has the potential to be world class.

Hey guys I know this is a banter page. I also know and understand that some had Mr Moyes as not their favourite person. However, please remember that when Moyes took over, we were regularly bottom 5 and just missing relegation. We also had rubbish training facilities and quite a terrible squad. Slowly he built a bigger better squad and made changes within the club that are the foundations for Roberto to build on. Moyes may have been a bit defensive in tactics sometimes, but please show some respect for the guy. He really did turn us round and lay a good foundation for Roberto to build on. The quality of our club is at least 10 times better than when he took over. Previous to that we had suffered about 10 years of utter rubbish.

Yep - how did our finances get so bad in the 1990s after the brilliant 80s?
Was it because of Heysel? {Ed025's Note - not just that, we failed to invest..

Agree0 Disagree0

I think we all respect moyes for stabilizing the club.
But when push came to shove I feel he never had that killer instinct.
Too many times last season we could have picked up the 3 points, but never went for the jugular.

We still made him a multi-millionaire for his troubles though.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree for the stick we everton supporters give BK and Moyes, we have come a long way in the last 10/11 years, we were shocking before he come, had a pretty cheap over aged squad but he gradually changed that, I also think he had come to bypass were he couldn't seem to go any further.

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks guy. these are the type of comments that do show a little respect. I have seen others that are just too rude and disrespectful. Our club is above this and we do not want to be badmouthing people just because they have moved on. We can leave that to the reds.

Hi Eds
Haven't posted for a while, but thought i'd check in.

Personally I think RM is weighing up his squad and assessing who is good at what etc. In particular I think he is looking at Fellani to see if he fits in to the style of play he wants.
Yes the big fella can play when he turns up, but we need him to do this every game.

Fingers x that we can win the tournament because I know it won't be full strength teams, but it will show that we can compete under the new style.
RM will then be in a better position to decide where he needs to strengthen.
No doubts about it we have a strong squad and where I think we have the advantage is that we are already a tight knit squad and the players that have come in appear to have slotted in seemlessly.

I think players would be stupid not to want to play for us. We have so much potential its frightening, but only time will tell.

Fingers x that we can get a flying start and that RM can prove all doubters wrong. Just listen to the way the players talk about him. Hard work but lots of work with the ball at feet.
Hopefully we will show pace, vision, tenacity and ball retention to worry sides.

posted something like this when we played Accrington and got a pretty good response from a few of you who couldn't catch the match.

This is my brief summary of each players performance and a rating, out of 10, for them. This is just my opinion.

Everton 1 - 1 Juventus
Mirallas Asamoah
Everton Win on penalties.

Tim Howard - 9 - Had quite a bit to do, but came out on top in each situation. Made a few excellent saves, and saved the penalty to win the game.

John Stones - 10 - In my opinion, our man of the match. His distribution of the ball was fairly poor at time as he was prone to hoofing the ball up, but also kept his calm a few times and played out well. Defensively he was brilliant and made numerous tackles as well as one last ditch block to prevent a certain goal. Hit the post with a glancing header which deserved a goal. Finally, watched Pirlo, 'The Master', miss his pen and then had the confidence to step up next and chip it into the top corner, which would have earned him a 10, even if he'd been awful. Brilliant performance at CB.

Phil Jagielka - 8 - Was incredibly solid and reliable, made several tackles and was generally very difficult to beat.

Distin - 7 - Didn't have as much influence as the other two defenders and also picked up a (harsh) booking, but was still reliable and played his part in a strong back 3.

Seamus Coleman - 8 - Didn't have a huge influence on the game, but looked dangerous with the ball at his feet and composed playing his part of this 'keep-ball' philosophy. Got back, along with Baines, to transform the formation from 3-4-3 to 5-2-3 every time they attacked.

Darron Gibson - 7 - Wasn't able to control the game as much as he could in the other games due to the impressive pressure applied on him every time he got the ball. Wasn't amazing, but was better than Pirlo ;)

Marouane Fellaini - 6 - Was often too casual on the ball and gave it away a few times. Defensively he was a little rash and gave away a few fouls. Likely disappointed the American fans who clearly knew who he was (big cheer when they read his name from the team sheet), but his presence alone prevented them from really asserting themselves on the game.

Leighton Baines - 7 - Didn't have much influence, either, but defended fairly well and worked hard going forward.

Kevin Mirallas - 7 - One of the least effective players on the pitch. Scored a lovely goal, but barely touched the ball in the first half and struggled to beat his man whenever he did have it.

Victor Anichebe - 7 - Worked very hard all game but was constantly fouled and dragged around and subsequently, I don't think he even had a single shot. Unfortunately, his marker, Angelo Ogbonna was a physical match and he couldn't just power through.

Steven Pienaar - 7 - Was fairly dangerous on the ball, but also gave it away a few times.

Subs -
Bryan Oviedo - 7 - Didn't do much, but nearly scored a good, edge of the area header.
Ross Barkley - 7 - Wasn't on the pitch very long at all (4 mins?) but nearly played a great through ball with his first touch, had a great long shot which nearly went in and scored an excellent pen.
Osman - 5 - Barely touched the ball except to miscontrol it which directly set up their goal. Also missed a penalty. Wasn't very poor, just unfortunate on both occassions.

I should state that Juve where clearly a very well drilled team and the efficiency with which they pressed was amazing and the main reason a few of the players gave the ball away so many times.

Let us know if you disagree with any of them. {Ed025's Note - good stuff AB..

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Does Anichebe go out of his way to look for the wrestling matches - because that's what he thinks he's good at - so it looks like he's doing 'something'?

I don't recall Gary Lineker constantly wrestling with defenders? Or any other strikers past or present come to think of it who spend their whole time in physical battles with defenders.

Is it him (vic), or is it them (the defenders)?

Agree0 Disagree0

I think it's a combination. I think they realise that because he's so huge, they can enter a physical battle with him and he'll fight back, rather than go down. If someone as big as Ogbonna went near Lineker, they'd immediately concede a free kick as he throws himself to the floor.

Agree0 Disagree0

Anichebe is so concerned with wrestling defenders he forgets about the ball coming to him. How people can say he is brilliant at holding the ball up is beyond me. The number of times he lost the ball was ridiculous although he did get better as the game went on. Not good enough to play up top on his own in my opinion.

Agree0 Disagree0

Big Vic was great. He battled like the battering ram he is.

He won free kick after free kick which gave us a lot of opportunities to put the ball in the box in a controlled state of play.

Finally it was him that won the ball that led to the goal.

Take the blinkers off guys. He's not Messi. You need variety in your attack. We had to play a bit more direct at times and he does a better job at holding the ball than Jelly or Kone.

Our next (second) match will be in Los Angeles on Saturday, August 3rd, at 19:30 local time. That equates to a UK time of 03:30 on Sunday, August 4th. We'll be playing the winners of the forthcoming match between Real Madrid and LA Galaxy.
If we win our second match, we'll then play our third match in Miami on Wednesday, August 7th at 21:00 local time, which equates to a UK time of 01:00 on Thursday.
If we lose our second match, we'll also play in Miami on Wednesday, August 7th (the two matches that day are a double header), but at 18:30 local time, which equates to a UK time of 22:30 on Wednesday.
Our opponents in our third game are yet to be determined by other results, but will be one of AC Milan, Inter Milan, Valencia or Chelsea.
Simples. {Ed025's Note - good info sid...cheers..

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Miami games will be 1 hour later than that Sid as eastern time is 5 hours behind us. TomD

Agree0 Disagree0

TomD: My bad - I stand corrected. I forgot to correctly allow for the difference between EDT (Eastern Daylight-saving Time) and BST (British Summer Time). The former is four hours behind GMT and the latter is one hour ahead of GMT, which equates to a nett five hour difference. That makes our third match having a UK kick-off time either 23:30 (on Wednesday) or 02:00 (on Thursday) depending upon which of the two matches we've qualified for. Apologies for poor arithmetic and once again thanks to TomD for spotting that. At least by giving earlier times people wouldn't miss the start of the games - well that's my lame excuse :-)

Agree0 Disagree0

No worries Sid, I wasn't trying to be a knitpicker just trying to clarify the time, no offence meant.

Agree0 Disagree0

I see that our match against Real Madrid on Saturday is actually at 5pm in Los Angeles, which equates to 1am on Sunday morning in the UK.

Hang on a minute I thought we deserved the win last night or this morning I should say we passed the ball a lot more Gibson was class and is the pivot in our side fellaini just needs to get used to his new role stones was class as well and as for his penalty well what can you say especially as pirlo just missed what confidence to do that he won't be going out on loan that's for sure only negative was at the back when I thought we played it too casual at times although its nice to play from the back we invited unnecessary pressure on us bit like Wigan did hope we can correct this and sometimes you need to just get rid especially against teams like that barkley will be awesome this season and I predict him to make World Cup squad big season for him and Martinez will bring out the best in him let the boy express him self I am not putting him in the same league as Zidane but I see similar qualities the way he's built and composure on the ball if he turns out half as good then he is going to be world class

I see Stevie Gerrard is saying that Liverpool must hold on to Suarez whatever. Apparently the improving strength of Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea mean that there is only 1 champions League spot left up for grabs. Fighting for this place, Liverpool apparently will be up against Arsenal and Tottenham for this remaining place and obviously if they sell to Arsenal will have a lesser chance.
That's right Steven, keep writing us off, just like the last two seasons where we have finished above you.
Degsypulford

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Yea I agree with you we never get talked about as contenders for champ league and I don't know why as we are the only team out of Liverpool and spurs who don't rely on one player to get them there sorry to your fans as both your top player is leaving as your now regarded as a selling club ha ha Steven Gerrard needs to get his head out of the sand that's be buried in it for 3 seasons liverpool are not a top 4 club anymore your the 7th best team in prem at this moment

I watched the game and we are still a way behind top teams like juventus in terms of close ball control - and I think this is where the top teams have the big advantage.

Juve were able to constantly close us down because our guys are not confident on the ball when someone is within a couple of yards of them - so they constantly get rid quickly and are always under pressure

The juve boys did not mind our guys being close up to them as they just use their foot skills to keep possession and go past people in confined spaces

This is where Martinez Ned's to concentrate his efforts for me - you'll always be second best whilst you have worse close control - the players need to practice it every day, day in day out

Ps I don't think we need to worry about fellaini being poached - he looks slow and gets dispossessed too easily against top players so I don't see a champs league team building the midfield around him - he's good against average prem team players but not against the very best players who have that extra speed and control

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Juventus are champions of Italy give the lads a break, you are right Felli was poor as was Pieman and Kevin, Stones was excellent and Howard made some good saves. When RM plays his best 11 then we will see a big difference.

Agree0 Disagree0

Personally I thought we out played them for much of the game and certainly equal to them for the rest. They had one or two efforts, we hit the bar and had one disallowed. Infact if not for Osman dodgy defending they wouldn't have scored there goal!
I agree Felli gave the ball away too often tonight but I would love to see the stats on how many times he won it back!and big vic was awesome dispite a ridiculous amount of fouls on him, the guy worked his socks off. Wait minute you did watch the game yeah?

Agree0 Disagree0

They are the champions of italy and I thought we were a match for them. There was a time we would have lost about 3-4 nil against them. We are progressing and playing good football.

Agree0 Disagree0

Utter negativity. I despair that people can only derive negatives from beating teams like Juventus.

Our defence was solid, our keeper was good. Our midfield was tenacious and often but not always composed.

The goal we scored was class and the one we conceded was admittedly poor.

We one on pens with our first choice pen takers off the field

And all this against Juventus!!

Bring on Real Madrid

01 Aug 2013 09:08:07
what is your point. the big fella done his bit on the pitch, he did not go around assaulting young people in the street. this guy is not wanted or needed at everton.

Agree0 Disagree0

Before anyone has a go, when I say great post I mean in the way that he described it (so to say).

I do agree with the replies about we can't expect too much as they are champions of Italy, etc.

As I said, 'great post' is in reference to the OP's description and the way he noticed it.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm the OP - Mick - people say it was a negative post because we got a draw/win on pens - like that's all that matters - but I'm not looking at result - too many people write up their summary of the game based on the score - but you really need to be looking at who's got the most possession to see who is the best team in the long run - yes, sometimes the 'worst' team will win - (like us beating Man United last year and them winning the league, or us grabbing that late winner against spurs after they'd controlled the game) but you should really only be happy when your team is 'on top' of the possession - that's what really counts in the long run - those are the teams that finish the highest - and you can see that in a match like Manutd vs ManCity - title contenders - they will scrap like mad for the 'upper hand' possession wise in the first 10-15 minutes before one team starts to dominate - because that possession dominance is what eventually wins more games than it loses - and to win the possession game you have to have good foot skills, neat passing, and constantly be chasing and closing the other team down - for 75% of this match Juve had the ball, and were closing us down when they did not have it - whereas we were backing off a lot of the time when they had it

that is only natural to some extent - they have got slightly better players and they cost more - but what I'm saying is that this is the area where we have to improve if we want to climb the league - the close ball control has to be the top priority - and there's no reason why all pro footballers can't work on that day in and day out until they are really comfortable with it

it sounds as if Moyes mostly worked on fitness and less on the ball skills - but at least Martinez seems to understand its all about the ball control and possession {Ed025's Note - thats one of the reasons i championed martinez mick, guts and determination will only get you so far, to really compete, you need skill and invention as well, and i think bobby will bring us that, and move us forward mate..

Agree0 Disagree0

Mick, your point is a valid one. It's just after turning over Juventus I think it's an opportunity to focus on what strides forward we have made in a very short period, albeit in pre season friendlies.

I agree with you on the importance of possession as most will.

COYB
Toffee ace

Agree0 Disagree0

Absolute rubbish. Possession doesn't win you games, chances converted do. Teams can have 80-90% possession and create 30 chances but if they don't score they don't win. I'd rather a team who converts their chances than plays around passing going nowhere without scoring, like Wigan last season.

Agree0 Disagree0

But you can't practice or guarantee 'converting chances' - it's a bit of a lottery, but you can load the dice in your favour by : 1. having skilful forwards like van persie who have the skills to turn a half chance into a goal (out of our control because we can't afford them) and 2. increasing your amount of chances - so if you create 10 decent chances through more possession verses your oppononents 5 chances then in the long run you will win more than them (we can control this aspect to some extent)

the teams that have the most possession are the teams that finish higher in the league

if we played Juventus 10 times I expect that they would probably win about 6 or 7 of them - and that's because they have better players who have more possession, better technique on the ball and can weave their way past defenders to create chances

you saying 'converting chances' is all that matters is like saying "scoring goals" is all that matters - well we need to be thinking at a deeper level than that

Agree0 Disagree0

Makes me laugh, it was a Pre season friendly ffs. a lot of the team (probably all of them) ain't even match fit yet. You can't judge nothing on last nights game whatsoever. It may aswell of been a training game along with the rest of Pre season. The season starts two weeks Saturday, that's when we'll see a full strength team under Martinez at it's best.

Agree0 Disagree0

Don't get too carried away boys Juve were missing their five best players and have only been in training for just over a week. Decent performance by the lads though. We well deserved the win.

Just a quick word on barton.
Some have said it already, but big Dunc has one of the worst disiplinay records in football, and got put in prison for an assult on the pitch.
Yet he was and still is a club ledgend.
If he's willing to take a pay cut and is on a free, then give him a shot.
We have a great squad, but more depth is always welcomed. COYB!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Very true.

Agree0 Disagree0

The difference between big dunc and Barton is off the field!

Yeh big dunc did some silly things on the field but off it he was never in the news or in trouble with the police!

That's where joey's problem is, I get he's a huge evertonian and wants to play for our great club, but that isn't enough!

We are everton!
We have principals, standards and integrity! Why go back on everything we have done in the community and with the kids (ticket prices etc) and sign somebody who stubs ciggies out on youth team players, kicks and punches opponents and punches people in town just because he feels like!!

We are way way better than that!

Agree0 Disagree0

Are we really that desperate that we want him at our club?. Anyway now we've knocked him back he's in the press saying he didn't want to come anyway, Marseille are his number one choice!. Say's it all about the lad.

If Joey Barton is in any way, shape or form, part of the vision for Everton Footbal Clubs' future. then we must be Blind!!! The very idea of this mediocre excuse for a footballer possibly playing for this great Club, does not bear thinking about. he's lower than a snakes' belly. I have read that some fans think "he could do a job for us". yeah, just like Peter Johnson did. ripped the heart & soul out of Everton FC. We must already be a laughing stock just being linked with him, even though it's his agent and NOT Everton who is making all the noises. Thanks but NO THANKS.

I know how many people are against Barton but I quite like him, yes he is a complete kn*b at times but he is a very good footballer. And can you imagine him in the derby?! How up for it he'd be! I think personally he could do a job for us, and I'm sure if we did sign him there would be behaviour clasuses of some sort like if he did something wrong he'd leave, but I think if any club can turn him round it's us. I know I'd do anything for my club and I'm sure all of you would as well, ad just the fact that a fotballer is willing to take such a huge pay cut! 35k each week! Some people don't earn that in a year (I know he's not exactly short of money) but I think it shows his intentions and I know that if he is signed it would split the club down the middle but personally i'd take him.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Stop talking crap mate, he's an person and yeah I can imagine him in the derby getting sent off after five mins. He is not fit to wear the shirt and I can't even believe all these people who would have him. He won't be signed end of.
