Big game next week. A win at bornmouth used to be taken for granted. They have a good and dangerous front two.

I was concerned that we didn't buy another forward but I think we have more than enough goals in the team. Although not as good (as still learning) I think Calvin Lewis will be able to play the Tolson role when needed and hold the ball up for our midfield players to run on to. I do however feel naisse doesn't fit into team anymore.

I would like to see Mina play next week as Wilson and King will be a test. I personally think Mina and Zouma are a better centre 2 than the other 3 we have.

On a slightly negative note - I think Pickford has been poor so far. I thought the free kick against wolves he had some unatural movement in his feet which left him flat footed and yesterday he made a couple of mistakes - but that's just being extra picky.

Very last thing - who is this fella wearing Walcotts strip - he looks completely different hAhaha.

COYB - great start!

I think holgate and keane have done well, but i agree with the fact that mina and Zouma will be a better pairing Once fit and ready.

Nilsatis either of them (Mina, Zouma) partnering Keane or Holgate would be fine to be honest because both have steel in them and will not allow their space to be bullied.

Would like to see DCL be a bit more selfish in front of goal, when he was throughout he should of drilled it at the goal. That’s where lukaku gets his success, selfishness in front of goal.

My God when we got linked with every United CB I thought Lindlelof might be the answer if we didn't get Mina/ Zouma. I thought the fact he could play CB/ RB would be ideal but it turns out he can't play anywhere.

So good visiting the site and everyone is happy and excited we know we need to improve but look at the difference an offensive manager makes it has just lifted the whole place long may it continue.

What pleases me is that in every comment so far Silva has mentioned the defence and how they are working on it. Never once did I hear that from our other offensively minded Manager/ Coach in Martinez.

Still a lot of work to be done but what a change in the performance and attitude of virtually the same players as last year, Richarlision excepted.
Instead of just wanting to get behind the ball we were chasing, fighting to get it back. Instead of looking at putting a 5th defender on in the second half to protect our lead which then invites the opposition onto us we made changes in attack which kept Southampton on the back foot, disrupting their football in their half rather than trying to hold them in our half.
The most pleasing, exciting thing for us to look forward to is we have the promise that we can improve further. In defence we still have to introduce Mina, Zouma and Digne - there is room for us to strengthen.

In midfield we can look forward to Gomes, Bernardo and Dowell pushing for places in the team.

Up front we have Calvert Lewin, Bernardo, Lookman even Niasse to look at. After just 2 games Tosun, Richarlison, Walcott and Sigurdson are showing good understanding and interplay which bodes well for the future.

Leading all this is a manager who has them playing as a team and confidence is beginning to return to everyone

Early days but a good, solid, confident start with the promise of more to come

Having watched the match back, (recording and MOTD) it is quite easy to see how watching our first home game of the season some (myself included) got somewhat carried away with some of the pundits and media editors plaudits. The fact is though that Mr Silva is quite right on saying we do need to work hard on our defence and particularly against set pieces. Their header in my humble opinion was far to easy the lad was in loads of space (behind Keane think) and yet up to that point I thought the two young lads in the middle had done a good job. Let's see how we are against Bournemouth (2 games 2 wins) after Silva has had another week with the lads.

We definitely need to work on defence, although we put a good performance in, a stronger side Will cause us problems. People say mina coming in to partner keane, petsonally i think holgate looks better than keane. Time will tell. Maybe mina- Zouma. Either way its nice to have options .

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2018 20:45:54
Must admit I haven't seen to much of him but Mina is supposed to be more aggressive in the CB position than anyone else we have at the moment (apart from Zouma perhaps) , with any of those two in the CB position I don't believe Strikers/ Forwards will be able to muscle the space they want.

Holgate gets better every game he plays IMO. I’d go with him and Mina - good mix of pace and power there for me.

{Ed025's Note - but zouma has not come from chelsea.s bench to sit on ours windsor, i think he will have had assurances about playing time myself mate..

20 Aug 2018 13:37:00
If he displaces Keane, mina or Holgate then we will definitely have some player on our hands. I think holgate has a place to lose and I would think mina is a sure starter when fit. It's between Keane and Zouma to displace one or the other.

What a difference a forward thinking manager makes to a club.

If you're positive in your play, positive in your communication with your players, positive in your communication with the fans and positive in you and your teams ambition you can make great things happen.

When Sam came in he told us all we are relegation material. We can't win playing football and need to scrap points to get to safety. Then he tells the world we are playing good football after having 2 shots on target in 4 games and what do we all expect with the players we have available. He makes you believe it.

Everton yesterday with 10 out of 11 players the same as last year we looked a completely different animal. Quick forward thinking football with every player looking to help an attack to be built. From the back to the front everyone had the same idea.

The free kick yesterday showed more attacking enterprise than anything Sam or Koeman produced last season. In the 1 minute that free kick was alive it was more than all of the minutes put together last season in showing invention and imagination. It was genius and brilliant and the players executing it would have grown an extra foot after the ball nestled in the back of the net.

There is a skewed perception in England that you only make yourself safe when playing defensive football. Well Silva has showed that this myth should be left in past along with the Allardyce's of the footballing world. In MODERN football there is no longer a place for them.

Back to the FOOTBALL, our forward players yesterday produce a top draw performance, all as good as each other. The move between Sig and Theo deserved a goal and would have been difficult to beat as goal of the week. Sig in particular put in a performance that you see gracing teams like Barcelona or Real.

Tosun has turned into a superb target man and helps bring everyone into play. He seems to be able to link up with anyone and is a perfect player to the other forwards to run off. Ricky and Theo linked up for the second goal, Sig and Theo on numerous occasions, Theo with Tosun, Ricky and Tosun, they all seem to know what the other wants and can do. I don't know how you defend against that fluid foursome.

However, this was all possible because of how well Gana and a brilliant performance from Snids had until his injury. I'm not his biggest fan for reasons shown by him in the last 12 months but one pundit pointed out that maybe his poor performances were down to how managers had been playing him. Well, if the other 9 men on the pitch can improve under Silva then why can't he?

For the new players, Silva not playing has given them something to think about. Like, wow, I'm going to have to work damn hard to dislodge this lot. Genuine competition has never been so high.

We have a long way to go and there are tons of problems that I can see still. We are going to get beat but the seed has been planted in the players, the staff and more importantly the fans. It'll grow if we give it time and patience. The players believe it and the fans yesterday certainly do.

10 to 7th was my wish this season. If we keep this up though I might change it to 6th. At the moment though, I'm just happy to see my Everton that I know and fell in love with playing back at the old lady.

Let's not get carried away but you can allow yourself to get excited. Just a little anyway.

{Ed025's Note - what an excellent post, one of the very best i have seen on these pages john and total respect to your literary acumen mate..

19 Aug 2018 10:29:24
Cheers ED but it's what happened on that pitch yesterday that wrote these words. 😉

Imagine if we won a trophy! 😲😂

How are you feeling ED. Happy with what's going on?

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - delighted john, these are basically the same players who looked an absolute shambles at times last season, i really believe in the manager and DOF and that they are taking us in the right direction mate..

19 Aug 2018 11:09:13
Absolutely ED. Organised all over the pitch.

You hear people say about being organised at the back but it's even more important to be organised upfront. You start to defend from the front and you start your attack from the back. It feels now like they are all starting to understand this.

Also, what a revelation Brands has been. His interviews this week have given us all a little understanding of what goes on behind the scenes.

There really is a new phylosophy at the club and it seems to be about inclusion. The interviews and openness and even the Snids interview yesterday on sky is obviously an idea for a better understanding between club and fans. I'm really buying into all this.

Absolute cracking post BJU.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2018 12:36:30
Great post BJU. I, like yourself always thought there was a team in there last season. What Marco is doing is changing the mindset of the same players we had last season.
It's remarkable players like Schneiderlin and Keane are quickly looking like decent players again.
Even Sandro, although can't seem to hit the back of the net, looked like a decent footballer again.
Schneiderlin has a long way to go to win back the fans but, if he knuckles down and buys into it, he will be a fan favourite again.
It's early days and we only have the same points after 2 games as last season but, boy do we look completely different.
Baines needs a special mention because like jags was for the last few seasons has been written off by some because he's in his 30's.
Digne is going to have to go some to displace him.
But when he does, well have a real threat in Baines coming on with 20mins to go, to try and win a game.

One thing all fans on here wanted was to see a progression when the new manager came in, and we are seeing it now in bucketfulls.

Agree4 Disagree0

19 Aug 2018 13:19:31
That BJU is one of the best pieces I have read in a long time. Brands and Silva seems to have vanquished the negativity that Koeman and Big Sam embellished upon us and we are seeing now the fruits of their philosophy. 2 games and the change in the mood and our play is in stark contrast to the garbage and dribble we have been dealt with for the last couple of seasons.

If we can get a result against Bournemouth won't be easy they are playing well. But if we do I'm confident of a home win against Huddersfield this could be the momentum that really flurishis through a team and it will be a fantastic start to the season, could be top by Christmas blues looking at them fixtures, dare to dream coyb.

{Ed025's Note - im just happy with the style of football stef, its a million miles from the dross we witnessed last season and we still have some top quality to come in, no doubt there will be some losses and i think our finishing has to improve but the smiles are back on the supporters faces and thats great to see mate..

19 Aug 2018 08:48:52
Very true Ed25 I’m enjoying what I’m seeing from the lads I have very good feeling about this season.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - me too stef, im keeping my expectations in check though as its very early days yet mate..

19 Aug 2018 09:52:15
I am loving it, but can see we are still really poor at defending set pieces. The standard of football is a million miles better than recent seasons. We have obviously worked at free kicks and corners offensively. But our defending at them is a weakness. I am sure Silva and co will be working on defending them, but BIG improvement is needed. If we can improve in this one area, we have a chance to keep on picking up points and then the test will be if we can perform against the so called top teams.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - i think we all know we still have defensive issues degsy especially centrally, these have been addressed hopefully with the inclusion of mina and zouma mate..

19 Aug 2018 10:15:18
I was thinking; if I'm going to be critical we could have been more clinical. We did have a lapse at the back but Holgate and Keane were solid all game and haven't really played together much. The whole round improvement though in such a short time has been unbelievable and unimaginable. To think that football was in the same year as the dross (insert stronger term 😊) that was played: words can't describe. what's crazy is he has improved overall and not just in particular areas. i'm not counting chickens but the early signs look promising indeed.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - very much so tit mate..

19 Aug 2018 10:21:36
The problem with set pieces is if you are Donald marking like what we do, you have to attack the ball with aggression if it's going into you area. We didn't do that with the goal. We did though do it in the first game very well and for most other times during this.

However, Davies took a step 1 foot to forward and miss judged the header at the front post which cost us. We seem to be getting better with dealing with the ball over the top as well and now force the player out wide.

Overall though our general defensive play is much better than last year as it allows us to be more assertive going forward.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Aug 2018 10:35:47
Erm zonal marking not Donald marking! 😂😂😂.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2018 11:51:23
I wondered what you were on about BJU! That made me giggle. Cheers mate! Re the comment. now I know you meant zonal. I would guess that is one reason Mina and his 6ft 5inch was bought. Many times last season we lost goals with quite simple balls over the top. Another poster put a post about Keane being slow on the turn and weak defending balls over the top which I agree with. He ball watches. However, Holgate seems to get better and better and at the tender age of 22 and looking so good would be a perfect partner for Mina. Or maybe Zouma? Either way, I am one for the modern type of footballing center half and have had many debates about playing the ball across the back line as England did with Stones this recent world cup. It is the continental way and Man City do it as do our rivals. The old Jags style of center half is a thing of the past now. It can be scary for fans to watch but is the way forwards in my view. I do think the positive view you point out is a big part of things but I would also add that the one player (being Richarlison) has made the biggest impact these 2 games and Allardyce was here when we signed Tosun and Walcott so I give him a tiny bit of credit for that. The rest of your post I agree with 100% COYB.

Donald marking is the future. If the ball comes into the box, DUCK.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - or even trump!..

19 Aug 2018 13:28:38
That's it explained. The ball comes over and Keane ducks! Now we know why. Silva told him he had to Donald mark!

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2018 20:59:53
With Mina and Zouma there (both aggressive CB's and Zouma in particular quite quick) It really should be a wake up call for Keane, still young and learning his trade but there again so is Holgate and at times the lad looked like he had been playing there for years.

Still a few little things to improve on but it's a huge turn around overall from last season. Need to work on our defence especially set pieces, going forward we are dangerous. Loved seeing the trick set piece it shows the boss and boys are working, all 6 forwards used in the game put a shift in tracking back, hassling and being a nuisance which i love to see.

If Schniederlin is out for more than a few weeks which I am worried about I hope we keep Besic as with Gomes not ready and Baningime been struggling with injury, McCarthy not due back till December, we are short in centre midfield now.

Keane has improved on last season a lot but still leaves me nervous when the ball is in the air or played long and he has to turn as he seems to react slow or lose the ball, Holgate was impressive and will only keep improving with experience.
