One of my earliest and still one of my most vivid childhood Everton memories was seeing us win the FA Cup in 66. I remember England winning the World Cup the same year but that had minimal effect on me.
Since that day, whether it be as an Evertonian or via my low level amateur football involvement, cup football has always been special. The magical semi final performance against Tottenham, us missing out on the FA Cup days after Rotterdam, wins in 84 and 95, Lampard Senior scoring in the semi final replay. Whether it be victory or defeat the FA Cup cannot be trivialised. It part of our DNA as a club.
In my opinion Saturday's game against Bournemouth is one of the biggest games of the season. Win it and we have some momentum and hope for the rest of the season. Lose it and the the knives will be out big time.
We have effectively already beaten Bournemouth twice at their place, even though we drew the game. We should beat them again as long as the manager doesn't try and rotate, after all we have no other game this month.

I'm all for praising Howard seeing that he has had 10 at Everton. No doubt and deserves everything positive that he gets. Read some things Martinez said about Howard and how he was exceptional for committing himself so long to one club and that it was unusual for a foreign player to do so. Nothing wrong with all that.

Thing is I couldn't help thinking about Distin. He had 6 seasons at Everton with 210 appearances. Currently he is in his 16th season in premier league and is the most capped foreign outfield player in the premiership. What praise did he get in his final season at Everton. Just about got a farewell on the last day. Treated really badly by Martinez.

To strong a personality for RM, same with Mirallas. RM likes people to listen and believe in his rhetoric not to question it, yes men only.

I hate to say this and I know most will not agree with me but winning the FA cup could keep Martinez at the club, this may get us relegated next season so let's go out the cup and get rid of the double glazing salesman.

That's what would make you happy milomj?

If we won the FA cup and finished, let me see, 5th in the league, that's what would make me happy. O yea and Joel to be picked every game and we only let in 5 goals for the rest of the season. I'd be delighted.

Doesn't bother me too much who the manager is. Always want Everton to do well. Can't really think of any situation when I'd want Everton to lose.

Your a dreamer if we did win the cup we would finish in the bottom half of the table and if we did go down next season would a day out at Wembly be worth that, no way.

Win a cup and takes a team down.get your head out the clouds.if that's what happens then I must of been in a coma when the likes of man utd, city,Chelsea, arsenal and even the RS won the cup. don't remember then winning championship season after.it happened to Martinez once.leave it at that eh.

Ideally we'll do well in the cup, finish top 7 and hope that the new owners or current owners, whoever's in charge, doesn't use that as an unconditional reason to keep Martinez in charge, instead insisting that he addresses our major defensive problems and his stubbornness before we even contemplate him take charge of another season.

Havent seen that quote Tbone, but if that's true the mans just a total utter barm pot mate. I like many had the wool pulled over my eyes in his first season . Now seeing through him I can't bare to listen to the inane drivel he comes out with week in week out, his picking of favourites (you all know the ones) , square pegs in round holes, his inept substitutions, his tactics and team set ups, inability to see games out, but worse of all for me is 4 home wins since April, that's criminal.

Ed, why was the end bit of my post left off? There was no swearing involved I used a slang word, of which I find hard to believe would cause offence, I've seen far far worse written on the site. I only said how I feel which is my opinion and how I feel, freedom of speech and all that.

In the transfer window just past, Chealsea were clearly still interested in stones, we were obviously in need of a keeper.
It now seems we are interested in chealsea's 2nd choice keeper at 8m, yet we have invested instead 14m in a striker, who, for a variety of reasons seems unfit to play.
WHO THE HELL IS RUNNING THIS MAD HOUSE?

Believable2 Unbelievable0

18 Feb 2016 19:09:00
I think at 8m begovic would be a steal, keepers really can win you games. See how Joel does first though, he's earned his shot until the end of the season I reckon.

18 Feb 2016 19:44:20
We needed a quality striker as well to back up/ rest lukaku. Plus we might already have a quality keeper in robles. Let's just wait and see how the lad does for the rest of the season and reassess it in the summer.

Niasse a doubt for fa cup tie with Bournemouth he had minor operation on wrist but should be available for villa match only us can buy a player then take month or more before he even makes his debut.

Believable4 Unbelievable2

18 Feb 2016 14:24:32
Sounds like they are making it up as they go along. There was no word about an operation or wrist before. Before the last game they said he would be available for Saturday's game.

I don't know. Must be some reason as to why he's not allowed to play. Strange goings on.

18 Feb 2016 14:48:33
Makes you wonder if RM actually wanted this player in the first place. Every time he is mentioned there is another new excuse as to why he can't play.

The strategy from Mr Fraud is to lower our expectations so that any achievements he gets crowns him with the messiah title. After all he was hired on the basis of ignoring his previous Premiership record and solely on his FA Cup win. I hope all those accusing those of us that dare to criticise with negativity, come back on this board when we finish lower than last season and explain why and how that happened.

Duncansmum, so if we finish 1 place above last season you will be singing RM's praises. We all have our opinion of RM and have every right to put that opinion on the forum. What I find irritating about the negativity is that some of the comments made are not based on fact and some are mere speculation, made depending on how people feel at the time. I just don't see the point dwelling on the negatives but if it floats your boat then go for it. If we do finish lower than last season I will happily post on this board how unhappy I am. I just don't think that will happen I can see us going on a good run and possible finishing 5th. COYB.

sa90 No.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Feb 2016 14:46:32
I agree sa90 with all bar us finishing 5th. Be delighted if we do. But can't see it happening.

Just out of curiosity DM am I one of those who give out when someone 'dares to criticise Martinez'. I'd doubt I am because I've criticized him plenty. It's just I'm willing to give him a proper chance.

I was slightly on the anti Martinez side when he was appointed. Wasn't happy at all because he got relegated with his last team. We were after spending 11 years with a manager who took us safely away from them horror days and I thought it was a gamble to bring in someone who had a record of doing the worst thing, for me, getting relegated.

Since then I've heard people praise Martinez for his first season. Imo at the time it wasn't really his squad. Second season was a write off. I said at the end of this season. Martinez's third that we'd all be in a better position to know where we stand.

I've seen and heard the same people who praised Martinez in his season now calling for his head. As sa90 says people post more about how they are at the time of posting rather than what is fact. Speculate alot.

I'm not pro Martinez but I am pro being 100% sure not to sack a manager unless you are sure he is not the man to take the club forward. At the moment I can't say I'm 100% sure Martinez is not the one.

I think he's not but I'm not certain. I know there are plenty who are certain he's not the one. These same people would never consider if they are wrong.

I think spudv is the only one gets what I've been saying about this over the last couple of days. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I'd be delighted if Martinez finish's the season strong. Bluupaul you mentioned something about us finishing 5th and not winning the FA cup.

It's possible that we can finish and win the FA cup. Personally I can't see it happening but that doesn't mean its not possible.

First things first I think we have a very good chance of beating Bournemouth. I'd be surprised if we don't. After that I don't know. If we finished in top 7 and got to FA cup final. It definitely would not be a disaster of a year.

Agree1 Disagree1

18 Feb 2016 14:57:31
To be fair sa90, there have been a few posts having a go at people being negative with regards to the manager so I think Duncs reply was aimed at them. We are all entitled to our opinions on our club, some of us just don't buy into the bs that RM spouts. I respect your opinion as much as everyone else on here mate but I think you are being a bit too optimistic with your 5th place prediction. Like Dunc, I think we will be lucky to finish in the top half but I will be more than happy to be proven wrong. Either way, I still want a change of manager next season as I don't believe he can ever improve on his first season. Last season was abysmal and this one, for me, hasn't been too good either. I'm sick to death of interviews where he states how unlucky we have been. We shouldn't be leaving anything to chance come match day, pity the manager doesn't see it that way.

Agree3 Disagree0

18 Feb 2016 15:37:51
If Martinez stops being so stubborn and arrogant, stops speaking bullsh*t in interviews and refusing to take any blame, starts practicing corners and hires a good defensive coach, then I would maybe be happy to keep him on another season. He's showing no signs of doing any of those things though so think he should go. If we win the cup and finish top 8, or finish top 6 without the cup then who knows.

Think this Begovic could be a goer in the summer, not as if he is in the shop window at Chelski so can't see top clubs looking at him, he is quality and would make a massive difference to our team, from what I have seen a leader too.

i agree murf he is quality, big, commanding, takes out everything in his way comes and gets crosses wots not to like and at 28yrs of age has a good 10yrs left in him but I am not building my hopes up as the summer is a long way off,it would be good though if he could sign a pre nup contract then at least we know he is ours.

Interesting article on Sly this morning, it lists the squad costs per team in which we are 9th. So if position is related to squad costs then we are pretty much where we are supposed to be 1 point from 9th. Now if you look at the table this season only Leicester and Watford are really over achieving with Chelski and The Toon the under achieving teams the rest of the top 10 are pretty much the teams you would expect be based on cash. My questions are:

In general do you think that the cost of the squad is directly relevant to position?

Do we need to spend almost double our current spend to compete with the top 5?

If we finish higher than 9th how many will think we have over performed and RM has had a good season?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

18 Feb 2016 13:26:05
Our squad may be 9th, but surely if it were a table of squad value we would be higher considering considering we bought stones for 3 mil, Coleman for 60k, Deulofeu for 4 mil was it? And many others who are worth much much more than we paid for them. The squad value should be indicative of where teams finish not the squad cost :)

Instant Karmas gona get you, what a fitting moment when Stirling felt hard done by against Spurs and pelagreni having a hissy fit to the ref, what goes around, comes around, now for our bit of justice against Bournemoth and Atkinson, a 98th minute shot hittng the bar, comng down with seconds to go, hitting the goalie on the back of his leg and crawling over the line just as the whistle is about to sound, a wins a win anddue some luck.

Ive got my crystal ball out and foresee Howard playing in the cup game. Martinez will not play Robles, then drop him for the next prem game, his only justification is to play Howard in the cup and hope he plays well enough to keep him in the side, I could be wrong but I will not hold my breath, expect Kone and Osman to start as well with Niase coming on in the 88th minute, with Kevin M dishing out the oranges at half time.
