Great to see bolasie get some game time for the under 23s. Early days but I'm excited for his return.

Why aren't we playing Lookman. He's gunna get pissed off and if one attractive bid comes in he's going to want to go. Is Alledyce protecting him from the media like Moyse did for Rooney back then. The kid wants to play so let him. 100% he'll give it his all and goals come from when players enjoy their football. Or was it Alledyce couldn't play him in fear of Liverpool cutting us up on the counter attack.

We're under strength at the back - we need wide men who will help to protect the full backs at the moment. Mane's break through at the end of the first half exposed the weakness on the right and Sam brought on Lennon to sure things up.

This is where we are right now. Lookman is an attacking force and I rate him highly, but is he going offer much support for Kenny? Getting back to basics and keeping some clean sheets is the priority - he'll get his chance I reckon, but will need to be patient.

11 Dec 2017 23:02:09
Yep apart from the penalty statement, i know two wrongs don't make a right, but come on lfc have made an art of diving and getting dodgy pens in past years, taught by past masters in the dark art, been saying this for years, now we play to the same tune and all of a sudden its headline news on lfc forums, what a joke, sterling is only just learning to stand up after the years of coaching he had, if it ws me i would be seeking compo, and stevie g,? don't even get me started.

Agree1 Disagree1

11 Dec 2017 22:37:18
So you believe in essence that Lovren was only protecting himself, Sorry Ed001 even Carragher said it was a pen and he is more biased than any red.

Protecting himself my Ar*e.

Agree0 Disagree4

{Ed001's Note - nope, he was putting his hands on him to hold him in place. Carragher is irrelevant, like all in the media he has an agenda and is on the bandwagon that bitches about everything Lovren does. I guess it is nice for an ex-defender like him to feel like he was any better, but I have seen him make far worse mistakes. There was no push, so it is not a pen. Every time two players run together like that the one behind has his hands on the other and no decision is ever given unless the player in front dives to the floor like it was a push, as Calvert-Lewin clearly did. It is a contact sport and you are allowed to touch each other. Go back and watch everytime the Everton backline launch the ball up to Calvert-Lewin and he and the man with him put their hands out to touch each other, are you going to expect a foul to be given each time that happens too? It is just a natural thing to put your hands on them so you know exactly where they are.}

12 Dec 2017 06:16:55
The way I see it Ed001 is the modern day footballer is coached to go down if and when he feels contact in order to gain an advantage for his side. Is this cheating? You may say it is, but you could also argue that it is clever centre forward play. You are right about contact and only recently, still not as much, we are seeing penalties given for pulls and deliberate pushes and blocks from corners. I do believe it was a penalty and if it was Williams on Solanke, I would still say the same, pundits, fans, managers, can all have an 'opinion' all that matters is the opinion of the man in the middle, the referee. Anyways must go, my mate who's a red is crying on the phone going on about spilt milk or something of the like.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - as I said, it is a penalty because the ref decided it was and that is really all that matters. My problem was with Lovren letting the ball reach Calvert-Lewin, everything after that is a problem caused by that mistake. I am not upset about it or anything, you had a game plan and you enacted it well, yes he went down easy but he should never have had the chance to and that is on Liverpool, not Everton. I did say I don't think it is that big a talking point and should be just sucked up and accepted by those that don't think it is a penalty as the decision is down to the ref. The point for me is to look at what went wrong to put the team in that position in the first place, rather than the actual moment itself.}

12 Dec 2017 08:10:52
Always feel you speak sense Ed001,and again your assessment is a good read.

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - thank you mate. Those kind of games are the worst to assess though, trying to do it with a clear head and forgetting it is Everton is difficult when your phone is flooded with texts from people sending digs or moaning about things as you type. I would be really interested in a similar article from an Everton perspective, as I really want to know how you would feel if you tried to remove the passion from it. Watching Williams and Martina in an Everton shirt must be sickening!}

12 Dec 2017 10:07:26
You are right with the Williams and Martina comment, and if I'm honest when I seen the starting 11 for Liverpool I was surprised but also happy. Coutinho movement off the ball would have caused us massive problems and probably would have been the difference needed to break us down. Martina showed Saleh inside far too much and it was inevitable that he was going to get the space on his left foot to have a go.
We came with a gameplan to frustrate Liverpool and hopefully nick one from a set piece or mistake.
It wasn't pretty from us and we never really got out of our own half and to me that will be down to fear of committing too many forward and being hurt on the break.
Would I be happy with this on 6th January in the cup? Defensively yes but I want to see us go and try and open up Liverpool and use pace down the flanks to expose the back 3 that Klopp likes to play, we have pace to do this, will Sam risk that over a more compact defensive minded set up? Only time will tell.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Dec 2017 10:13:55
Pretty honest and good assessment of the game Ed I disagree on a couple of points, about the penalty and I also think we went into the game to try to win but at all costs not to loose rather than not win but its your opinion which is fair enough.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I am sure Sam wanted to win, you are right, but I meant to say his priority first and foremost was to not lose. I probably haven't worded it well, the sites have been busy so I am trying to edit and bang out the article quickly inbetween, which does not lead to the best laid out and well planned article!}

12 Dec 2017 11:02:32
In the first half calvert lewin touched Lovren with his shoulder amd he hit the floor and got a free kick though?

Agree2 Disagree0

12 Dec 2017 11:41:50
Spot on dgold it was exactly the same foul but outside the penalty area, the ref gave that as a free kick so why shouldn't he give ours as a penalty.

Agree4 Disagree0

12 Dec 2017 21:05:51
All I can say on the decision of the ref give the pen he should of give the hand on Martina’s chest from salah not saying it was a foul just the same contact in dcl just need consistentmcey from the ref throughout the game. Saying that very happy he gave the pen and Big sams ideas worked because of it we didn’t get beat I just hope he doesn’t do this tactic in every game.

Crazy mistake to go into a season with only one left back, even if he did not rate him, Garbitt, should have been put in as backup.
However nothing can be done about that till January, but, in the mean time, there must be someone with a natural left foot in the group, who, even if we have to play someone out of position would make a better fist of it than that third rate righr back makeing a hash of it.?

I think Lookman, Bolasie and DCL's pace with Sig and Rooney pulling strings will cause defences a lot of problems. Big Sam's got us back in the fight and with players coming back and the Jan window (which I'm not expecting miracles from) I think we can get back into the Europa next year.

We've been dreadful pre-Christmas most of the last ten years but this year felt worse because of the optimism the money brought. We're known for our form in the second half of the season and hopefully we're building some momentum going into it.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Dec 2017 17:07:31
Find it difficult to believe people are complaining about the way we played yesterday. We were basically playing with 10 men thanks to Martina.
Thought Sam got his tactics spot on. Think about it, five weeks ago that would have ended up five or six nil.
The best bit for me though was Klopps meltdown on telly, that was priceless. Look we know we have a lot to put right, but confidence is growing, and that can only be a good thing.

Liverpool fan I come In peace. Well done for the draw you guys defended well and restricted our guys to few chances.

My take is; I remember Everton allways giving us a good hard fought game and to me yesterday it felt like men against boys for the most part. I mean no disrespect that is just what it felt like to me.

Sam's a good manger but do you see him taking you to the CL I'm not so sure you my not lose too many but say if you get 10 draws in a season even half of them as wins gives you five more points.

He will settle the ship make you hard to beat but you are a big club and should be aiming to be a team that other teams fear.

I wish you well for the rest of the season and good luck

Ps I'm a wool so I can wish you luck.

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Dec 2017 15:48:50
chrisp85 yes but you hit the nail on the head there. First of all we need the ship to be steady. Sam himself has said first of all he needs to get the defence sorted and 4 games in that seems to be happening which I think is remarkable given what he is working with. Even Scneiderlin seemed to do okay when he came on. Also Sam Allardyce is not the neanderthal many deem him to be. He has for years used modern techniques, just watch what is really going on, on the touchline and up in the stands. Finally never had my doubts about Sammy Lee, the bloke is a professional and knowledgable football fans respect that. This is the City of Liverpool after all.

Agree2 Disagree0

11 Dec 2017 20:04:31
What I noticed Sam does and myself and father in law have been saying for years, is why don't managers have a member of backroom staff in the stands. We sit in the Upper Bullens and can see the full pitch and shape of players.

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Dec 2017 12:08:22
Just thought I would mention this for the Lukaku not being replaced, which is true by the way.

Let's put this into perspective, Rooney has scored as many premier league goals this season as Lukaku has at Utd. All those saying we are missing his goals, well the stats do not lie,

I was in the sell the Lukaku camp, provided we brought in a top class striker, once we do this results will follow.

We have taken a few steps back, but have no doubt Sam will fix our defence, then bring in a striker, small steps first but getting there already without any reinforcements.

January will be an interesting window and I expect Sam will go for his former Kone.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

11 Dec 2017 18:48:07
No doubt Rooney is still quality. if not the quality he was when he was early 20's. And yes his goals equal Lukaku's. but remember quite a few of those goals came in the last few games where we picked up points. Before that we lost a lot and no one was scoring whilst we were conceding 2/ 3/ 4 a game. If Rooney keeps on scoring at this rate we will have only defensive problems to sort. and Sam A will surely do that. So let's keep positive and hope these 2 things coming together will mean we can move upwards in the League.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Dec 2017 19:08:49
It wasnt just his goals, his presence, height, strength, pace and the mental factor to our players as he gave everyone an option but to also the opponents defence as he would draw deffenders. We were more balanced with lukaku.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Dec 2017 05:40:58
I agree with all of the above. It's worth noting however that Rooney's goals have earnt us 9 points on their own (I've included the West Ham game in that because I doubt we would have scored a goal otherwise, he played a blinder that day) . Didn't Lukaku's goals earn us about that many points all season? We just need someone quality to fill Calvert Lewin's place (as he needs more time to develop in my opinion) and a solid CB and we are good to go in Jan.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Dec 2017 12:02:23
See fat Sam is taking credit for us only letting in one goal since he came on board. Of course he forgets Unsworth was in charge of the team against West Ham and it was Unsworth's team for the first game Sam had. I have another theory and that is we at last have a young center-back in Holgate. I know he makes mistakes and is learning but he is has played pretty well so far and is far better than the rest. Added to that Kenny is getting better with every game. Now if we could get rid of Martina and probably Williams and just play Jags we could have a good defense so the rest of the team could do some attacking and less defending.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

11 Dec 2017 12:41:26
But it can not be dismissed that bringing him on board had a mental impact on the players, until he was hired not Many of them put the effort in for Unsy.

11 Dec 2017 15:03:33
Keane, Holgate and Kenny will hopefully be our defense for years to come. Just need an experienced and energetic left back and a young up and coming one to complete the set.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Dec 2017 15:45:40
I think its unfair to think Sam had nothing to do with Unsworth's last game, let's face it the players had not performed for him over the previous five weeks.
The fact is he was there on board, did speak with the players and we saw a considerable change of attitude!

Agree2 Disagree1

11 Dec 2017 16:10:37
1940Mike but he is indeed correct. Since he has been in charge we have only let in 1 goal, and that was against probably the team with the best attacking line in the country.

For the short time Unsworth was in charge we let in more goals than any other manager we have ever had over the same time span.

Lets move on from Unsworth, he is no longer in charge for a reason and other owners do not seem to be knocking his door down to recruit him to manage their first teams.

Agree1 Disagree2

11 Dec 2017 16:57:58
Sorry guys but Jags has had his best days. Kenny is going to push Coleman all the way now. Agree we are weak down the left and Martina is not the answer, Gylfi spent nearly all the game trying to cover for him. Need a striker a left back and centre back, that would make me happy.

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Dec 2017 18:09:06
I think that you are missing my point mates. I am saying that Holgate came in for the West Ham game (Unsworth's pick) at center-half and has done very well and since then we have been much better defensively. The sooner we get in a few more young and quick defenders and get rid of the likes of Williams and Martina the better.

Don’t want it to seem like I’m hating every player but I’ve honestly never seen the hype around him, he’s fast but poor in the final 3rd and defensively is unbelievably easy to beat, I’ve seen basic wingers like Lennon, Moses and Navas tear him to shreds. He’s basically the English Patrick Van Aanholt.

Be prepared for old school football Bobby, SA stated that we are going to build the defence before we look to other parts of the team. I personally don't have a problem with the 10 men park the bus counter attack game plan as long as we get points out of the game.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Dec 2017 04:25:22
I can't believe fans complaining about us playing for (and getting) a result - albeit a hard-earned unadventurous (to put it mildly! ) draw - at the dark side.
Of course it would have been great to play an open, expansive, toe-to-toe style, but that most likely would have led to another hammering from their formidable attacking players.
At this stage of the season, if some fans would prefer style over substance, well that's their prerogative, but imho we need results and we need the team to gain confidence from those results.
Whether or not under SA we can show creativity and attacking quality on top of defensive solidity and organisation only tine will tell, but I for one am content (for now! ) to concentrate on the improvement in results, player confidence, and team organisation under a coaching staff that has the experience, determination, and knowledge to deal with where we have found ourselves so far this season.

Believable5 Unbelievable1

11 Dec 2017 09:31:13
Big Sam has a reputation for negative football and some fans seem to have latched onto this. But any top manager knows you start a game off with the intention of keeping a clean sheet and build from there. Remember that Allardyce had Jay Jay Ocotcha and Ivan Campo in his team at Bolton. how we could do with either of those now. I am expecting him to lay the foundation of a solid defence and build a midfield with some creativity as time goes on. But BobbyC you are rightabout some fans. and would they enjoy watching us playing expansive football in the Championship. because 4 games ago and the preceding 10 or so games. that's where we were headed! Big Sam might not yet have all the answers, but I for one would rather us start building a team and bring in the expansive football at a later date when we have the players.

All this talk about penalty decisions being "soft" or "harsh" is so bogus.
As SA said, it's either a penalty or it isn't a penalty.
The debate really should be about whether or not the referee made a correct decision. That's why I would like the match officials to use instant video reviews, although I accept even that wouldn't guarantee 100% accuracy for all situations.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it would be pointless, even now after everyone has seen a hundred reviews there is an argument about it, so what chance would officials have? People just need to accept referee's decisions, even when wrong, so long as the decisions are honestly made it's just a case of sucking it up and moving on when it goes against you.}

11 Dec 2017 04:36:27
Ed001 - agree about accepting decisions, but anything that helps the referee’s decision-making process sounds good to me.

Agree2 Disagree0

11 Dec 2017 09:53:40
Ed your spot on decisions are made during the match unless it blatant cheating there is no recourse to change anything. the referee's decision is final

I do agree that technology would aid the decision making process but it would be a really difficult to get the correct process in place. If you look at rugby for example the game has changed from an interpretive style to being played to the letter of the law. Football is not really conducive to video scrutiny in real time. There is far to much cheating by the players, for a start corners and attacking free kicks would be an absolute nightmare to manage as well as aerial contests. The game would have to change significantly. On the other hand watching some managers post match interviews would be highly entertaining after they have seen a match winning goal being cancelled due to a review that finds foul play committed in the build up.

The most telling stat from the derby is that Everton had 66% of their shots on target against Liverpool's 13% on target.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed0333's Note - Im not trying to be funny here mate but Everton had shots on goal?

11 Dec 2017 03:30:55
Well the penalty was one for sure. I that was the only one then it is 100%.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - you had 3 mate. One soft, almost pass back by Sigurdsson which Mignolet caught (which tells you how soft it was when he got near it, let alone catches it!) and one other in the 2nd half which missed, hence the 66%. One miss in 3. I am not sure how anyone can think that these stats are relevant, clearly someone who has no idea about the value of stats or how to read them. You need huge numbers of whatever it is being measured before any stat is truly relevant. You are talking about 100 games or so before you can rule out aberrations in the data, at least. Shots on or off target in one match is too small a spread to even have any relevancy other than mild interest from people who don't understand them.}
